Reading tip (Find the key word): Pick the key word in the question (roots, honey, clouds). Find that word in the passage. Read that sentence carefully — it holds the answer.

  1. 1.Winds are moving air. A gentle wind is called a breeze, and it feels pleasant on a hot day. A very strong wind with heavy rain is called a storm. A cyclone is a huge storm that forms over the sea and can damage houses and trees. Before a cyclone, the weather office warns people near the coast. People then move to safe places until the cyclone passes.

    Where does a cyclone form?
    (a) over a desert (b) over the sea (c) in the hills (d) in a forest
  2. 2.Rain begins with the Sun heating water in seas, rivers and lakes. The warm water turns into water vapour and rises into the sky. High up, the air is cold, so the vapour cools and forms tiny drops. Many drops join together to make clouds. When the drops become too heavy, they fall as rain. This journey of water is called the water cycle.

What do many tiny drops join together to make?
    (a) rivers (b) steam (c) clouds (d) ice
  3. 3.Plants make their own food in their leaves. To do this, they need sunlight, water and air. The roots take in water from the soil. The green colour in the leaves helps them catch sunlight. Animals cannot make their own food like plants do. That is why plants are very important for all living things.

Which of these do plants need to make food?
    (a) sunlight (b) salt (c) darkness (d) sand
  4. 4.Frogs can live both in water and on land. A frog lays its eggs in water. Tadpoles come out of the eggs and swim with their tails, like tiny fish. Slowly, they grow legs and lose their tails. Then they hop out of the water as young frogs. Frogs catch insects with their long, sticky tongues. In the monsoon, you can hear them croaking loudly.

Where does a frog lay its eggs?
    (a) in trees (b) in nests (c) in water (d) on land
  5. 5.Honeybees live together in a home called a hive. A hive has one queen bee, who lays all the eggs. The worker bees collect nectar from flowers and turn it into honey. They also clean the hive and look after the young bees. When a bee finds flowers, it does a special dance to tell the others where to go. Bees also help plants by carrying pollen from flower to flower.

Why does a bee do a special dance?
    (a) to have fun (b) to scare birds (c) to tell others the way (d) to wake the queen
  6. 6.The peacock is the national bird of India. The male peacock has a long tail with shining blue and green feathers. Each feather has a pattern that looks like an eye. When it rains, the peacock often spreads its tail and dances. The female, called a peahen, is brown and has no long tail. Peacocks eat seeds, insects and even small snakes.

When does the peacock often dance?
    (a) at night (b) when it is hungry (c) in winter (d) when it rains
  7. 7.The Sun is a star, the closest one to Earth. It is a huge ball of very hot gases. The Sun gives us light and heat. Without the Sun, there would be no plants, animals or people on Earth. The Sun looks small only because it is very far away. We must never look straight at the Sun, because it can hurt our eyes.

Why must we never look straight at the Sun?
    (a) It is rude (b) It moves fast (c) It can hurt our eyes (d) It is too far
  8. 8.Trees are very useful to us. They give us fruits, wood and shade. Trees take in the air we breathe out and give out oxygen, the gas we need to live. Their roots hold the soil together, so it is not washed away by rain. Birds build nests in trees, and many insects live on them. That is why we should plant more trees and not cut them down.

Which gas do trees give out?
    (a) smoke (b) steam (c) oxygen (d) dust
  9. 9.Butterflies begin their life as tiny eggs on leaves. A caterpillar hatches from each egg. The caterpillar eats leaves all day and grows bigger and bigger. Then it makes a hard case around itself called a pupa. Inside the pupa, the caterpillar slowly changes. After some days, a beautiful butterfly comes out and flies away.

    What does the caterpillar eat?
    (a) flowers (b) seeds (c) insects (d) leaves
  10. 10.Water can be found in three forms. When water freezes, it becomes solid ice. When ice melts, it turns back into liquid water. When water is heated, it turns into steam, which is a gas. We use ice to keep drinks cold on hot days. Clouds are formed when water vapour cools high up in the sky.

What cools high up in the sky to form clouds?
    (a) smoke (b) dust (c) water vapour (d) ice
  11. 11.Elephants are the largest animals that live on land. An elephant uses its long trunk to breathe, smell, drink and pick up food. It sucks water into its trunk and then sprays it into its mouth. Elephants have big ears that flap to keep them cool. They live in groups led by the oldest female. In India, elephants live in forests in Kerala, Karnataka, Assam and other states.

Why do elephants flap their big ears?
    (a) to hear better (b) to scare birds (c) to keep them cool (d) to fly
  12. 12.The peacock is the national bird of India. The male peacock has a long tail with shining blue and green feathers. Each feather has a pattern that looks like an eye. When it rains, the peacock often spreads its tail and dances. The female, called a peahen, is brown and has no long tail. Peacocks eat seeds, insects and even small snakes.

What does the pattern on each feather look like?
    (a) an eye (b) a moon (c) a leaf (d) a star
