Reading tip (Find the key word): Pick the key word in the question (roots, honey, clouds). Find that word in the passage. Read that sentence carefully — it holds the answer.

  1. 1.Our teeth help us bite and chew food. Children have twenty milk teeth, which fall out one by one. New, stronger teeth grow in their place. Sugary food and sticky sweets can cause holes in our teeth. So we should brush our teeth twice a day, in the morning and at night. We should also rinse our mouth with water after every meal.

What can cause holes in our teeth?
    (a) sticky sweets (b) green leaves (c) brushing (d) fresh water
  2. 2.Rain begins with the Sun heating water in seas, rivers and lakes. The warm water turns into water vapour and rises into the sky. High up, the air is cold, so the vapour cools and forms tiny drops. Many drops join together to make clouds. When the drops become too heavy, they fall as rain. This journey of water is called the water cycle.

Why do the drops fall as rain?
    (a) They become too cold (b) The wind pushes them (c) The Sun pulls them (d) They become too heavy
  3. 3.Frogs can live both in water and on land. A frog lays its eggs in water. Tadpoles come out of the eggs and swim with their tails, like tiny fish. Slowly, they grow legs and lose their tails. Then they hop out of the water as young frogs. Frogs catch insects with their long, sticky tongues. In the monsoon, you can hear them croaking loudly.

What comes out of frog eggs?
    (a) tadpoles (b) snakes (c) insects (d) fish
  4. 4.Water can be found in three forms. When water freezes, it becomes solid ice. When ice melts, it turns back into liquid water. When water is heated, it turns into steam, which is a gas. We use ice to keep drinks cold on hot days. Clouds are formed when water vapour cools high up in the sky.

    What is steam?
    (a) a gas (b) a solid (c) a liquid (d) a cloud
  5. 5.Ants are tiny insects, but they are very strong. An ant can carry things much heavier than its own body. Ants live together in large groups called colonies. Some ants build their homes under the ground, with many rooms and tunnels. When an ant finds food, it leaves a smell trail. Other ants follow this trail to reach the food.

Where do some ants build their homes?
    (a) in the sky (b) in birds’ nests (c) under the ground (d) on water
  6. 6.Our eyes help us see colours, shapes and light. Our ears help us hear sounds. We smell with our nose and taste with our tongue. Our skin helps us feel if something is hot, cold, rough or smooth. These five are called our sense organs. We must take care of them, for example, by not reading in dim light.

What should we not do, according to the passage?
    (a) drinking water (b) washing hands (c) sleeping early (d) reading in dim light
  7. 7.Elephants are the largest animals that live on land. An elephant uses its long trunk to breathe, smell, drink and pick up food. It sucks water into its trunk and then sprays it into its mouth. Elephants have big ears that flap to keep them cool. They live in groups led by the oldest female. In India, elephants live in forests in Kerala, Karnataka, Assam and other states.

Which of these does an elephant use its trunk for?
    (a) sleep (b) smell (c) hear (d) see
  8. 8.Butterflies begin their life as tiny eggs on leaves. A caterpillar hatches from each egg. The caterpillar eats leaves all day and grows bigger and bigger. Then it makes a hard case around itself called a pupa. Inside the pupa, the caterpillar slowly changes. After some days, a beautiful butterfly comes out and flies away.

    Where are butterfly eggs laid?
    (a) in water (b) under stones (c) on leaves (d) in nests
  9. 9.The Moon is Earth’s closest neighbour in space. It does not make its own light. The Moon shines because sunlight falls on it and bounces off. As the Moon goes around Earth, we see different shapes of it. On a full moon night, we see the whole round Moon. On a new moon night, we cannot see the Moon at all. It takes about a month for the Moon to go around Earth.

    Why does the Moon shine?
    (a) it is made of ice (b) it is on fire (c) it has lamps (d) sunlight bounces off it
  10. 10.Butterflies begin their life as tiny eggs on leaves. A caterpillar hatches from each egg. The caterpillar eats leaves all day and grows bigger and bigger. Then it makes a hard case around itself called a pupa. Inside the pupa, the caterpillar slowly changes. After some days, a beautiful butterfly comes out and flies away.

    Which is the correct order?
    (a) egg, caterpillar, pupa (b) pupa, egg, caterpillar (c) egg, pupa, caterpillar (d) caterpillar, egg, pupa
  11. 11.Magnets can pull things made of iron and steel. This pull is called attraction. A magnet cannot pull wood, paper, plastic or glass. Every magnet has two ends called poles: a north pole and a south pole. Two north poles push each other away. A north pole and a south pole pull each other close. Magnets are used in toys, fridge doors and compasses.

    What can magnets pull?
    (a) wood and paper (b) stone and sand (c) iron and steel (d) plastic and glass
  12. 12.The camel is called the ship of the desert. It can walk for many days on hot sand without drinking water. Its long eyelashes protect its eyes from blowing sand. Its wide, flat feet do not sink into the sand. The hump on its back stores fat, not water. In India, camels are found in the deserts of Rajasthan.

What does a camel’s hump store?
    (a) milk (b) water (c) sand (d) fat
