  1. 1.Rain begins with the Sun heating water in seas, rivers and lakes. The warm water turns into water vapour and rises into the sky. High up, the air is cold, so the vapour cools and forms tiny drops. Many drops join together to make clouds. When the drops become too heavy, they fall as rain. This journey of water is called the water cycle.

What is this journey of water called?
    (a) the rain dance (b) the cloud trip (c) the water cycle (d) the river path
  2. 2.Frogs can live both in water and on land. A frog lays its eggs in water. Tadpoles come out of the eggs and swim with their tails, like tiny fish. Slowly, they grow legs and lose their tails. Then they hop out of the water as young frogs. Frogs catch insects with their long, sticky tongues. In the monsoon, you can hear them croaking loudly.

Where does a frog lay its eggs?
    (a) in nests (b) on land (c) in water (d) in trees
  3. 3.The Sun is a star, the closest one to Earth. It is a huge ball of very hot gases. The Sun gives us light and heat. Without the Sun, there would be no plants, animals or people on Earth. The Sun looks small only because it is very far away. We must never look straight at the Sun, because it can hurt our eyes.

Why does the Sun look small?
    (a) it is very far away (b) it is behind clouds (c) it is cold (d) it is tiny
  4. 4.Winds are moving air. A gentle wind is called a breeze, and it feels pleasant on a hot day. A very strong wind with heavy rain is called a storm. A cyclone is a huge storm that forms over the sea and can damage houses and trees. Before a cyclone, the weather office warns people near the coast. People then move to safe places until the cyclone passes.

Who warns people before a cyclone?
    (a) the weather office (b) the fishermen (c) the school (d) the post office
  5. 5.Our heart is a strong muscle about the size of our fist. It works like a pump and pushes blood all around the body. The heart never stops, even when we are asleep. Blood carries food and oxygen to every part of the body. When we run or play, our heart beats faster. Doctors listen to the heartbeat with a stethoscope.

What does blood carry to every part of the body?
    (a) light and heat (b) food and oxygen (c) water and salt (d) air and smoke
  6. 6.Water can be found in three forms. When water freezes, it becomes solid ice. When ice melts, it turns back into liquid water. When water is heated, it turns into steam, which is a gas. We use ice to keep drinks cold on hot days. Clouds are formed when water vapour cools high up in the sky.

What cools high up in the sky to form clouds?
    (a) dust (b) water vapour (c) smoke (d) ice
  7. 7.Ants are tiny insects, but they are very strong. An ant can carry things much heavier than its own body. Ants live together in large groups called colonies. Some ants build their homes under the ground, with many rooms and tunnels. When an ant finds food, it leaves a smell trail. Other ants follow this trail to reach the food.

What does an ant leave when it finds food?
    (a) a smell trail (b) a light (c) a note (d) a sound
  8. 8.The Sun is a star, the closest one to Earth. It is a huge ball of very hot gases. The Sun gives us light and heat. Without the Sun, there would be no plants, animals or people on Earth. The Sun looks small only because it is very far away. We must never look straight at the Sun, because it can hurt our eyes.

Why must we never look straight at the Sun?
    (a) It is too far (b) It can hurt our eyes (c) It moves fast (d) It is rude
  9. 9.Magnets can pull things made of iron and steel. This pull is called attraction. A magnet cannot pull wood, paper, plastic or glass. Every magnet has two ends called poles: a north pole and a south pole. Two north poles push each other away. A north pole and a south pole pull each other close. Magnets are used in toys, fridge doors and compasses.

    What can magnets pull?
    (a) plastic and glass (b) iron and steel (c) stone and sand (d) wood and paper
  10. 10.Water can be found in three forms. When water freezes, it becomes solid ice. When ice melts, it turns back into liquid water. When water is heated, it turns into steam, which is a gas. We use ice to keep drinks cold on hot days. Clouds are formed when water vapour cools high up in the sky.

In how many forms can water be found?
    (a) two (b) three (c) five (d) four
  11. 11.The camel is called the ship of the desert. It can walk for many days on hot sand without drinking water. Its long eyelashes protect its eyes from blowing sand. Its wide, flat feet do not sink into the sand. The hump on its back stores fat, not water. In India, camels are found in the deserts of Rajasthan.

What protects a camel’s eyes from sand?
    (a) its long neck (b) its hump (c) long eyelashes (d) its wide feet
  12. 12.A seed has a baby plant inside it. When a seed gets water, air and warmth, it starts to grow. This is called germination. First, a tiny root grows down into the soil. Then a small shoot grows up towards the light. Soon the first green leaves open. You can watch this happen by keeping a few moong seeds on wet cotton.

Which seeds can you keep on wet cotton to watch them grow?
    (a) moong seeds (b) salt (c) sand (d) rice grains
