Reading tip (Find the key word): Pick the key word in the question (roots, honey, clouds). Find that word in the passage. Read that sentence carefully — it holds the answer.

  1. 1.Elephants are the largest animals that live on land. An elephant uses its long trunk to breathe, smell, drink and pick up food. It sucks water into its trunk and then sprays it into its mouth. Elephants have big ears that flap to keep them cool. They live in groups led by the oldest female. In India, elephants live in forests in Kerala, Karnataka, Assam and other states.

Who leads a group of elephants?
    (a) the biggest male (b) the youngest calf (c) the oldest female (d) a tiger
  2. 2.Frogs can live both in water and on land. A frog lays its eggs in water. Tadpoles come out of the eggs and swim with their tails, like tiny fish. Slowly, they grow legs and lose their tails. Then they hop out of the water as young frogs. Frogs catch insects with their long, sticky tongues. In the monsoon, you can hear them croaking loudly.

What do frogs use to catch insects?
    (a) their tails (b) their back legs (c) webbed feet (d) long, sticky tongues
  3. 3.A seed has a baby plant inside it. When a seed gets water, air and warmth, it starts to grow. This is called germination. First, a tiny root grows down into the soil. Then a small shoot grows up towards the light. Soon the first green leaves open. You can watch this happen by keeping a few moong seeds on wet cotton.

What grows first from the seed?
    (a) a shoot (b) a leaf (c) a flower (d) a tiny root
  4. 4.Trees are very useful to us. They give us fruits, wood and shade. Trees take in the air we breathe out and give out oxygen, the gas we need to live. Their roots hold the soil together, so it is not washed away by rain. Birds build nests in trees, and many insects live on them. That is why we should plant more trees and not cut them down.

What is the main idea of the passage?
    (a) Insects are small (b) Trees are very useful (c) Rain washes soil (d) Birds build nests
  5. 5.The Moon is Earth’s closest neighbour in space. It does not make its own light. The Moon shines because sunlight falls on it and bounces off. As the Moon goes around Earth, we see different shapes of it. On a full moon night, we see the whole round Moon. On a new moon night, we cannot see the Moon at all. It takes about a month for the Moon to go around Earth.

How long does the Moon take to go around Earth?
    (a) about a day (b) about a year (c) about a week (d) about a month
  6. 6.Our eyes help us see colours, shapes and light. Our ears help us hear sounds. We smell with our nose and taste with our tongue. Our skin helps us feel if something is hot, cold, rough or smooth. These five are called our sense organs. We must take care of them, for example, by not reading in dim light.

    What do we taste with?
    (a) our ears (b) our nose (c) our tongue (d) our skin
  7. 7.Plants make their own food in their leaves. To do this, they need sunlight, water and air. The roots take in water from the soil. The green colour in the leaves helps them catch sunlight. Animals cannot make their own food like plants do. That is why plants are very important for all living things.

Which of these do plants need to make food?
    (a) darkness (b) salt (c) sand (d) sunlight
  8. 8.Honeybees live together in a home called a hive. A hive has one queen bee, who lays all the eggs. The worker bees collect nectar from flowers and turn it into honey. They also clean the hive and look after the young bees. When a bee finds flowers, it does a special dance to tell the others where to go. Bees also help plants by carrying pollen from flower to flower.

Who lays all the eggs in a hive?
    (a) the worker bees (b) the oldest bee (c) the young bees (d) the queen bee
  9. 9.Our heart is a strong muscle about the size of our fist. It works like a pump and pushes blood all around the body. The heart never stops, even when we are asleep. Blood carries food and oxygen to every part of the body. When we run or play, our heart beats faster. Doctors listen to the heartbeat with a stethoscope.

When does our heart beat faster?
    (a) when we sleep (b) when we read (c) when we sit (d) when we run or play
  10. 10.Magnets can pull things made of iron and steel. This pull is called attraction. A magnet cannot pull wood, paper, plastic or glass. Every magnet has two ends called poles: a north pole and a south pole. Two north poles push each other away. A north pole and a south pole pull each other close. Magnets are used in toys, fridge doors and compasses.

What are the two ends of a magnet called?
    (a) tails (b) poles (c) heads (d) tips
  11. 11.The Sun is a star, the closest one to Earth. It is a huge ball of very hot gases. The Sun gives us light and heat. Without the Sun, there would be no plants, animals or people on Earth. The Sun looks small only because it is very far away. We must never look straight at the Sun, because it can hurt our eyes.

    What is the Sun?
    (a) a moon (b) a star (c) a cloud (d) a planet
  12. 12.Water can be found in three forms. When water freezes, it becomes solid ice. When ice melts, it turns back into liquid water. When water is heated, it turns into steam, which is a gas. We use ice to keep drinks cold on hot days. Clouds are formed when water vapour cools high up in the sky.

What cools high up in the sky to form clouds?
    (a) ice (b) smoke (c) dust (d) water vapour
