Reading tip (Find the key word): Pick the key word in the question (roots, honey, clouds). Find that word in the passage. Read that sentence carefully — it holds the answer.

NameDateTime takenScore ___ / 12
  1. 1.Rain begins with the Sun heating water in seas, rivers and lakes. The warm water turns into water vapour and rises into the sky. High up, the air is cold, so the vapour cools and forms tiny drops. Many drops join together to make clouds. When the drops become too heavy, they fall as rain. This journey of water is called the water cycle.

What do many tiny drops join together to make?
    (a) ice (b) rivers (c) steam (d) clouds
  2. 2.The camel is called the ship of the desert. It can walk for many days on hot sand without drinking water. Its long eyelashes protect its eyes from blowing sand. Its wide, flat feet do not sink into the sand. The hump on its back stores fat, not water. In India, camels are found in the deserts of Rajasthan.

    What is the camel called?
    (a) the sand king (b) the ship of the desert (c) the king of the jungle (d) the desert horse
  3. 3.Magnets can pull things made of iron and steel. This pull is called attraction. A magnet cannot pull wood, paper, plastic or glass. Every magnet has two ends called poles: a north pole and a south pole. Two north poles push each other away. A north pole and a south pole pull each other close. Magnets are used in toys, fridge doors and compasses.

What is the pull of a magnet called?
    (a) reflection (b) friction (c) gravity (d) attraction
  4. 4.Frogs can live both in water and on land. A frog lays its eggs in water. Tadpoles come out of the eggs and swim with their tails, like tiny fish. Slowly, they grow legs and lose their tails. Then they hop out of the water as young frogs. Frogs catch insects with their long, sticky tongues. In the monsoon, you can hear them croaking loudly.

Where does a frog lay its eggs?
    (a) in nests (b) in water (c) in trees (d) on land
  5. 5.Water can be found in three forms. When water freezes, it becomes solid ice. When ice melts, it turns back into liquid water. When water is heated, it turns into steam, which is a gas. We use ice to keep drinks cold on hot days. Clouds are formed when water vapour cools high up in the sky.

    What is steam?
    (a) a liquid (b) a gas (c) a cloud (d) a solid
  6. 6.Plants make their own food in their leaves. To do this, they need sunlight, water and air. The roots take in water from the soil. The green colour in the leaves helps them catch sunlight. Animals cannot make their own food like plants do. That is why plants are very important for all living things.

What takes in water from the soil?
    (a) the leaves (b) the roots (c) the flowers (d) the fruits
  7. 7.The peacock is the national bird of India. The male peacock has a long tail with shining blue and green feathers. Each feather has a pattern that looks like an eye. When it rains, the peacock often spreads its tail and dances. The female, called a peahen, is brown and has no long tail. Peacocks eat seeds, insects and even small snakes.

    What colour is a peahen?
    (a) green (b) brown (c) white (d) blue
  8. 8.The camel is called the ship of the desert. It can walk for many days on hot sand without drinking water. Its long eyelashes protect its eyes from blowing sand. Its wide, flat feet do not sink into the sand. The hump on its back stores fat, not water. In India, camels are found in the deserts of Rajasthan.

What protects a camel’s eyes from sand?
    (a) long eyelashes (b) its long neck (c) its wide feet (d) its hump
  9. 9.The Moon is Earth’s closest neighbour in space. It does not make its own light. The Moon shines because sunlight falls on it and bounces off. As the Moon goes around Earth, we see different shapes of it. On a full moon night, we see the whole round Moon. On a new moon night, we cannot see the Moon at all. It takes about a month for the Moon to go around Earth.

    Why does the Moon shine?
    (a) it is on fire (b) it has lamps (c) sunlight bounces off it (d) it is made of ice
  10. 10.Honeybees live together in a home called a hive. A hive has one queen bee, who lays all the eggs. The worker bees collect nectar from flowers and turn it into honey. They also clean the hive and look after the young bees. When a bee finds flowers, it does a special dance to tell the others where to go. Bees also help plants by carrying pollen from flower to flower.

    How do bees help plants?
    (a) by carrying pollen (b) by eating leaves (c) by watering them (d) by making shade
  11. 11.Elephants are the largest animals that live on land. An elephant uses its long trunk to breathe, smell, drink and pick up food. It sucks water into its trunk and then sprays it into its mouth. Elephants have big ears that flap to keep them cool. They live in groups led by the oldest female. In India, elephants live in forests in Kerala, Karnataka, Assam and other states.

Which are the largest animals that live on land?
    (a) rhinos (b) elephants (c) camels (d) giraffes
  12. 12.Ants are tiny insects, but they are very strong. An ant can carry things much heavier than its own body. Ants live together in large groups called colonies. Some ants build their homes under the ground, with many rooms and tunnels. When an ant finds food, it leaves a smell trail. Other ants follow this trail to reach the food.

True or false: An ant can carry things heavier than its body.
