Reading tip (Find the key word): Pick the key word in the question (roots, honey, clouds). Find that word in the passage. Read that sentence carefully — it holds the answer.

NameDateTime takenScore ___ / 12
  1. 1.Rain begins with the Sun heating water in seas, rivers and lakes. The warm water turns into water vapour and rises into the sky. High up, the air is cold, so the vapour cools and forms tiny drops. Many drops join together to make clouds. When the drops become too heavy, they fall as rain. This journey of water is called the water cycle.

What do many tiny drops join together to make?
    (a) clouds (b) ice (c) rivers (d) steam
  2. 2.The Sun is a star, the closest one to Earth. It is a huge ball of very hot gases. The Sun gives us light and heat. Without the Sun, there would be no plants, animals or people on Earth. The Sun looks small only because it is very far away. We must never look straight at the Sun, because it can hurt our eyes.

Why does the Sun look small?
    (a) it is very far away (b) it is cold (c) it is tiny (d) it is behind clouds
  3. 3.Our eyes help us see colours, shapes and light. Our ears help us hear sounds. We smell with our nose and taste with our tongue. Our skin helps us feel if something is hot, cold, rough or smooth. These five are called our sense organs. We must take care of them, for example, by not reading in dim light.

Which organ tells us if something is rough?
    (a) nose (b) ears (c) skin (d) eyes
  4. 4.Butterflies begin their life as tiny eggs on leaves. A caterpillar hatches from each egg. The caterpillar eats leaves all day and grows bigger and bigger. Then it makes a hard case around itself called a pupa. Inside the pupa, the caterpillar slowly changes. After some days, a beautiful butterfly comes out and flies away.

What is the hard case around the caterpillar called?
    (a) a hive (b) a nest (c) a pupa (d) a shell
  5. 5.Our eyes help us see colours, shapes and light. Our ears help us hear sounds. We smell with our nose and taste with our tongue. Our skin helps us feel if something is hot, cold, rough or smooth. These five are called our sense organs. We must take care of them, for example, by not reading in dim light.

Which word is the opposite of “rough”?
    (a) hot (b) dim (c) cold (d) smooth
  6. 6.Honeybees live together in a home called a hive. A hive has one queen bee, who lays all the eggs. The worker bees collect nectar from flowers and turn it into honey. They also clean the hive and look after the young bees. When a bee finds flowers, it does a special dance to tell the others where to go. Bees also help plants by carrying pollen from flower to flower.

Why does a bee do a special dance?
    (a) to scare birds (b) to tell others the way (c) to have fun (d) to wake the queen
  7. 7.Water can be found in three forms. When water freezes, it becomes solid ice. When ice melts, it turns back into liquid water. When water is heated, it turns into steam, which is a gas. We use ice to keep drinks cold on hot days. Clouds are formed when water vapour cools high up in the sky.

In how many forms can water be found?
    (a) two (b) three (c) four (d) five
  8. 8.Ants are tiny insects, but they are very strong. An ant can carry things much heavier than its own body. Ants live together in large groups called colonies. Some ants build their homes under the ground, with many rooms and tunnels. When an ant finds food, it leaves a smell trail. Other ants follow this trail to reach the food.

What does an ant leave when it finds food?
    (a) a sound (b) a light (c) a smell trail (d) a note
  9. 9.Trees are very useful to us. They give us fruits, wood and shade. Trees take in the air we breathe out and give out oxygen, the gas we need to live. Their roots hold the soil together, so it is not washed away by rain. Birds build nests in trees, and many insects live on them. That is why we should plant more trees and not cut them down.

Which of these do trees give us?
    (a) metal (b) shade (c) glass (d) plastic
  10. 10.A seed has a baby plant inside it. When a seed gets water, air and warmth, it starts to grow. This is called germination. First, a tiny root grows down into the soil. Then a small shoot grows up towards the light. Soon the first green leaves open. You can watch this happen by keeping a few moong seeds on wet cotton.

What is it called when a seed starts to grow?
    (a) evaporation (b) pollination (c) germination (d) digestion
  11. 11.The camel is called the ship of the desert. It can walk for many days on hot sand without drinking water. Its long eyelashes protect its eyes from blowing sand. Its wide, flat feet do not sink into the sand. The hump on its back stores fat, not water. In India, camels are found in the deserts of Rajasthan.

What does a camel’s hump store?
    (a) fat (b) milk (c) sand (d) water
  12. 12.Frogs can live both in water and on land. A frog lays its eggs in water. Tadpoles come out of the eggs and swim with their tails, like tiny fish. Slowly, they grow legs and lose their tails. Then they hop out of the water as young frogs. Frogs catch insects with their long, sticky tongues. In the monsoon, you can hear them croaking loudly.

    How do tadpoles swim?
    (a) with their legs (b) with their tongues (c) with their tails (d) with fins
