  1. 1.Earthworms are called the farmer’s friends. They dig tunnels as they move through the soil. These tunnels let air and water reach plant roots. Earthworms eat dead leaves and bits of rotting plants. Their waste, called castings, makes the soil rich. A field with many earthworms is usually healthy. Chemical sprays can kill these helpful creatures. So many farmers now use natural manure instead.

    What can kill earthworms?
    (a) Chemical sprays (b) Rain water (c) Natural manure (d) Dead leaves
  2. 2.Kabir found a brown wallet near the bus stop. Inside were some money and a card with an address. His friend Sonu said, “Keep it, nobody saw you.” Kabir felt uneasy about that idea. He walked twenty minutes to the address on the card. An old man opened the door and almost cried with relief. The wallet held his pension for the whole month. He thanked Kabir again and again. Kabir walked home feeling lighter than air. Honesty, he learnt, brings its own reward.

Where did Kabir find the wallet?
    (a) In a park (b) Near the bus stop (c) On a train (d) In the school
  3. 3.A magnet attracts things made of iron, nickel or cobalt. Every magnet has two ends called poles: a north pole and a south pole. If you bring two north poles together, they push each other away. A north pole and a south pole pull towards each other. In short, like poles repel and unlike poles attract. A magnet hung freely always points north and south. Sailors once used this idea to make the compass. Magnets also work inside fans, speakers and fridge doors.

What does “repel” mean in the passage?
    (a) Break (b) Push away (c) Pull closer (d) Spin round
  4. 4.Sound is made when something vibrates, or moves quickly back and forth. When you pluck a sitar string, it vibrates and makes a sound. The vibrations travel through the air to our ears. Sound can also travel through water and solids. In fact, it moves faster through solids than through air. Sound cannot travel through empty space, where there is no air. That is why space is completely silent. Loud sounds for a long time can harm our hearing.

    What can harm our hearing?
    (a) Soft music (b) Long loud sounds (c) Quiet rooms (d) Bird songs
  5. 5.Anjali was playing ball indoors when she knocked over her mother’s favourite vase. It broke into three pieces. Her younger brother Vivek said they could hide the pieces under the bed. Anjali was tempted, but she knew that would be dishonest. When her mother came home, Anjali told her the truth. Her mother was sad about the vase. But she hugged Anjali and said she was proud of her honesty. Together, they glued the pieces and used it as a pen stand.

Into how many pieces did the vase break?
    (a) Ten (b) Two (c) Five (d) Three
  6. 6.The night before my maths exam,
I sat as quiet as a lamb.
The numbers danced inside my head,
They followed me right into bed.
But Mother said, “Just do your best,
Then close your eyes and get some rest.”
I slept, I woke, I wrote with care,
And found the answers waiting there.

What did Mother tell the poet to do?
    (a) Eat more sweets (b) Skip the exam (c) Study all night (d) Do your best and rest
  7. 7.The Earth spins like a top on an imaginary line called its axis. One full spin takes about twenty-four hours. As the Earth spins, one half faces the Sun and has day. The other half faces away and has night. The Earth also moves around the Sun. One trip around the Sun takes about 365 days, which is one year. The tilt of the Earth’s axis gives us seasons. So spinning gives us day and night, while the tilt and the yearly trip give us seasons.

What is the imaginary line the Earth spins on called?
    (a) Equator (b) Pole (c) Orbit (d) Axis
  8. 8.Every winter, thousands of birds fly to India from colder lands. These travellers are called migratory birds. Many of them come from Siberia and Central Asia. They escape the freezing cold and find food in our lakes and wetlands. Bharatpur in Rajasthan and Chilika Lake in Odisha are famous places to see them. Flamingos, cranes and ducks are among the visitors. In spring, the birds fly back to breed. Protecting wetlands keeps their winter homes safe.

Why do the birds fly back in spring?
    (a) To find snow (b) To breed (c) To eat fish (d) To rest
  9. 9.A new girl named Lakshmi joined Tenzin’s class in July. She had moved from a village in Tamil Nadu and spoke little Hindi. At lunch, she sat alone under the neem tree. Some children laughed at her accent. Tenzin remembered his own first day in Delhi, when he too had felt lost. He sat beside her and shared his momos. Lakshmi taught him a few Tamil words in return. By August, the two were the best of friends.

Some clouds are dark and full of rain,
They rumble over hill and plain.
Some stretch like feathers, thin and high,
Brushed gently on the summer sky.
I lie on the grass and watch them go,
    A lion, a ship, a fat buffalo!

How are the feather-like clouds described?
    (a) Soft and wet (b) Thin and high (c) Fat and round (d) Dark and low
  11. 11.Lightning is a giant spark of electricity in the sky. It happens when electric charges build up inside storm clouds. A flash of lightning heats the air around it very quickly. The hot air expands with a loud bang, which we hear as thunder. Light travels much faster than sound. That is why we see the flash before we hear the thunder. During a thunderstorm, stay indoors and away from tall trees. Standing under a tree is not safe, as lightning often strikes tall objects.
