  1. 1.The waves come running up the sand,
They tickle toes and touch my hand.
They leave behind a shell or two,
Some pink, some white, and one bright blue.
The fishing boats go out at dawn,
And come back home when day is gone.
The seagulls cry, the breezes blow,
I wish I never had to go.

    What colours are the shells?
    (a) Black and grey (b) Pink, white and blue (c) Only white (d) Red, green and gold
  2. 2.Lightning is a giant spark of electricity in the sky. It happens when electric charges build up inside storm clouds. A flash of lightning heats the air around it very quickly. The hot air expands with a loud bang, which we hear as thunder. Light travels much faster than sound. That is why we see the flash before we hear the thunder. During a thunderstorm, stay indoors and away from tall trees. Standing under a tree is not safe, as lightning often strikes tall objects.

    What is lightning?
    (a) A falling star (b) A spark of electricity (c) A burst of rain (d) A gust of wind
  3. 3.Ayesha lives across the street,
We share our pencils, share our treats.
When I was sick with fever high,
She brought me notes and said, “Don’t cry.”
We sometimes fight about a game,
But by the evening, we’re the same.
A friend is like a shady tree,
That’s always there for you and me.

What do the friends sometimes fight about?
    (a) A game (b) Pencils (c) Money (d) Homework
  4. 4.Sana lived in a flat in Mumbai with no garden. She longed to grow her own vegetables. Her father found some old paint buckets and filled them with soil. Sana planted chillies, spinach and tomatoes on the terrace. She watered them every morning before school. Pigeons pecked at the seedlings, so she covered them with a net. In two months, she picked her first spinach leaves. Her mother cooked them for dinner, and Sana thought they tasted better than any others.

What does “longed” mean in the passage?
    (a) Feared (b) Forgot (c) Wished very much (d) Measured
  5. 5.A magnet attracts things made of iron, nickel or cobalt. Every magnet has two ends called poles: a north pole and a south pole. If you bring two north poles together, they push each other away. A north pole and a south pole pull towards each other. In short, like poles repel and unlike poles attract. A magnet hung freely always points north and south. Sailors once used this idea to make the compass. Magnets also work inside fans, speakers and fridge doors.

What happens when two north poles are brought together?
    (a) They pull together (b) They melt (c) They stick (d) They push away
  6. 6.Green plants make their own food. This process is called photosynthesis. Leaves take in carbon dioxide from the air through tiny holes. Roots take up water from the soil. A green substance in the leaves, called chlorophyll, traps sunlight. Using the energy of sunlight, the leaf turns water and carbon dioxide into sugar. Oxygen is given out into the air. Animals and people breathe in this oxygen.

Where do the roots take up water from?
    (a) From the soil (b) From the leaves (c) From sunlight (d) From the air
  7. 7.Sound is made when something vibrates, or moves quickly back and forth. When you pluck a sitar string, it vibrates and makes a sound. The vibrations travel through the air to our ears. Sound can also travel through water and solids. In fact, it moves faster through solids than through air. Sound cannot travel through empty space, where there is no air. That is why space is completely silent. Loud sounds for a long time can harm our hearing.

    What can harm our hearing?
    (a) Soft music (b) Quiet rooms (c) Long loud sounds (d) Bird songs
  8. 8.Gurpreet was chosen as captain of the school hockey team. In the first match, she tried to score every goal herself. The team lost badly. Her coach told her that a captain’s job is to help everyone play well. In the next match, Gurpreet passed the ball more often. Her teammate Neha scored two goals from her passes. The team won, and Gurpreet felt prouder than if she had scored herself. She learnt that teamwork wins matches.

Which team was Gurpreet captain of?
    (a) The football team (b) The hockey team (c) The kabaddi team (d) The cricket team
  9. 9.In many Indian cities, people face water shortages in summer. Rainwater harvesting is one simple answer. Rain falling on rooftops is collected through pipes. It is then stored in tanks or sent into the ground through pits. Water sent into the ground raises the level of water in wells. A single roof can collect thousands of litres in one monsoon. Some states have made rainwater harvesting compulsory for new buildings. Saving rain today means more water tomorrow.

How is rain from rooftops collected?
    (a) By pumps (b) In buckets (c) Through pipes (d) With nets
  10. 10.Plastic is cheap, light and strong. But most plastic does not rot away like leaves or fruit peels. A plastic bag may stay in the soil for hundreds of years. Plastic thrown on the road often blocks drains during the monsoon. Cows and other animals sometimes swallow plastic with food scraps. In the sea, turtles can mistake floating bags for jellyfish. We can help by carrying cloth bags and saying no to straws. Sorting dry and wet waste at home also helps.

How long may a plastic bag stay in the soil?
    (a) A few days (b) One month (c) Ten minutes (d) Hundreds of years
  11. 11.Sound is made when something vibrates, or moves quickly back and forth.

What does “vibrates” mean in the passage?
    (a) Becomes hot (b) Breaks apart (c) Moves back and forth (d) Stays still
  12. 12.The night before my maths exam,
I sat as quiet as a lamb.
The numbers danced inside my head,
They followed me right into bed.
But Mother said, “Just do your best,
Then close your eyes and get some rest.”
I slept, I woke, I wrote with care,
And found the answers waiting there.

What does “The numbers danced inside my head” show?
    (a) Worrying about maths (b) The poet felt sleepy (c) The poet was dancing (d) Numbers can dance
