  1. 1.A new girl named Lakshmi joined Tenzin’s class in July. She had moved from a village in Tamil Nadu and spoke little Hindi. At lunch, she sat alone under the neem tree. Some children laughed at her accent. Tenzin remembered his own first day in Delhi, when he too had felt lost. He sat beside her and shared his momos. Lakshmi taught him a few Tamil words in return. By August, the two were the best of friends.

Why did Tenzin understand how Lakshmi felt?
    (a) He knew Tamil (b) She was his cousin (c) The teacher told him (d) He felt lost once too
  2. 2.With coloured powder in a tray,
I start my rangoli at break of day.
    A dot, a line, a curve, a swirl,
A peacock’s tail begins to twirl.
Red and yellow, green and white,
I fill each petal, neat and bright.
My little brother claps with glee,
“Now make a rangoli just for me!”

What does the brother ask for?
    (a) A new tray (b) A rangoli for him (c) A peacock feather (d) Some sweets
  3. 3.In many Indian cities, people face water shortages in summer. Rainwater harvesting is one simple answer. Rain falling on rooftops is collected through pipes. It is then stored in tanks or sent into the ground through pits. Water sent into the ground raises the level of water in wells. A single roof can collect thousands of litres in one monsoon. Some states have made rainwater harvesting compulsory for new buildings. Saving rain today means more water tomorrow.

    What does “compulsory” mean here?
    (a) Must be done (b) Done for fun (c) Very costly (d) Not allowed
  4. 4.The Moon is Earth’s only natural satellite. It goes around the Earth once in about a month. The Moon does not have its own light. It shines because it reflects light from the Sun. As it moves, we see different amounts of its lit side. These changing shapes are called phases. On a full moon night, we see the whole bright face. On a new moon night, we can hardly see it at all.

    Why does the Moon shine?
    (a) It is made of ice (b) It is on fire (c) It reflects sunlight (d) It has its own light
  5. 5.Arjun was always in a hurry. One morning, he took a shortcut across the railway tracks to reach school early. A signalman shouted at him to stop. Seconds later, a goods train thundered past. Arjun’s legs were shaking as he stepped back. The signalman explained that trains are much faster than they look. From that day, Arjun always used the footbridge. He now says it is better to be late than to be sorry.

    What does Arjun use now?
    (a) A bicycle (b) A taxi (c) The shortcut (d) The footbridge
  6. 6.Zoya was afraid of water since she was small. Her friends went swimming every summer, but she watched from the side. One year, her cousin Aman offered to teach her slowly. On the first day, she only sat with her feet in the pool. On the third day, she floated while holding the edge. Each small step made her a little braver. But she hugged Anjali and said she was proud of her honesty. Together, they glued the pieces and used it as a pen stand.

  8. 8.Mangroves are trees that grow in salty water along the coast. Their roots stick out of the mud like knobbly fingers. These roots help the trees breathe in wet, airless soil. Mangrove forests protect the coast from strong waves and storms. They also give shelter to fish, crabs and birds.
