  1. 1.I made a kite of red and gold,
With paper thin and string to hold.
I ran across the open ground,
And up it rose without a sound.
It danced above the temple tower,
It climbed and climbed for half an hour.
Then snap! The string broke in the breeze,
My kite flew off beyond the trees.

How long did the kite climb?
    (a) For a whole day (b) For half an hour (c) For two hours (d) For one minute
  2. 2.The monsoon is a seasonal wind that brings rain to India. In summer, the land heats up faster than the sea. Moist winds then blow from the sea towards the land. The south-west monsoon usually reaches Kerala in early June. Over the next few weeks, it spreads across most of the country. Farmers wait eagerly for it because many crops need its rain. Rice, for example, grows in fields full of water. A weak monsoon can mean a poor harvest.

When does the monsoon usually reach Kerala?
    (a) Early January (b) Late October (c) Early June (d) Mid March
  3. 3.Lightning is a giant spark of electricity in the sky. It happens when electric charges build up inside storm clouds. A flash of lightning heats the air around it very quickly. The hot air expands with a loud bang, which we hear as thunder. Light travels much faster than sound. That is why we see the flash before we hear the thunder. During a thunderstorm, stay indoors and away from tall trees. Standing under a tree is not safe, as lightning often strikes tall objects.

Why is standing under a tree unsafe?
    (a) Birds live there (b) It strikes tall objects (c) Trees fall in rain (d) Leaves are wet
  4. 4.Zoya was afraid of water since she was small. Her friends went swimming every summer, but she watched from the side. One year, her cousin Aman offered to teach her slowly. On the first day, she only sat with her feet in the pool. On the third day, she floated while holding the edge. Each small step made her a little braver. By the end of the month, she swam across the pool on her own. Aman told her that being brave means doing something even when you are scared.

    Who offered to teach Zoya?
    (a) A coach (b) Her mother (c) Her best friend (d) Her cousin Aman
  5. 5.Before the final maths test, Dev’s classmate offered him a copy of the answers. Someone had taken a photo of the question paper. Dev was worried about the test, but he refused. He studied late with his sister, who explained fractions again. The next day, the teacher announced that the paper had leaked. She gave the class a brand-new paper instead. Dev did well because he truly understood the topic. Those who had learnt the copied answers by heart struggled.

    Who helped Dev study?
    (a) His teacher (b) His father (c) His sister (d) His classmate
  6. 6.Nisha loved the small river behind her town. Last summer, she noticed it was full of plastic bottles and bags. The fish she used to watch had vanished. She made posters and asked her classmates to help. Twenty students came on the first Sunday. They filled forty sacks with rubbish in one morning. The town council then put up bins and a sign that read, “Keep our river clean.” By the next monsoon, Nisha spotted fish again.

What did the town council put up?
    (a) Bins and a sign (b) A fence (c) A statue (d) A new school
  7. 7.Earthworms are called the farmer’s friends. They dig tunnels as they move through the soil. These tunnels let air and water reach plant roots. Earthworms eat dead leaves and bits of rotting plants. Their waste, called castings, makes the soil rich. A field with many earthworms is usually healthy. Chemical sprays can kill these helpful creatures. So many farmers now use natural manure instead.

    What are earthworms called?
    (a) The night hunters (b) The farmer’s friends (c) The garden pests (d) The soil’s enemies
  8. 8.Vihaan was batting in the final over of the colony cricket match. He edged the ball, and it brushed his bat before the keeper caught it. Nobody else heard the sound, and the umpire said not out. Vihaan’s team needed just four runs to win. Still, Vihaan walked off the field on his own. The other team was stunned. They lost the match, but players from both sides shook his hand. Vihaan felt that fair play mattered more than a trophy.

    What did the umpire say?
    (a) Wide (b) No ball (c) Out (d) Not out
  9. 9.A magnet attracts things made of iron, nickel or cobalt. Every magnet has two ends called poles: a north pole and a south pole. If you bring two north poles together, they push each other away. A north pole and a south pole pull towards each other. In short, like poles repel and unlike poles attract. A magnet hung freely always points north and south. Sailors once used this idea to make the compass. Magnets also work inside fans, speakers and fridge doors.

What are the two ends of a magnet called?
    (a) tips (b) poles (c) sides (d) edges
  10. 10.A vaccine helps the body fight a disease before the disease attacks. It contains a weak or harmless form of a germ. The body’s defence system learns to recognise it. It then makes special fighters called antibodies. Later, if the real germ enters, the body knows how to beat it quickly. Children in India get vaccines against polio, measles and other diseases. Most vaccines are given as injections, but the polio vaccine can be given as drops. Vaccines have saved millions of lives.

How can the polio vaccine be given?
    (a) As a cream (b) As a bandage (c) As drops (d) As a tablet
  11. 11.Meenal wanted to build a water filter for the science fair. Her first model leaked, and her second one was too slow. She almost gave up. Her grandmother reminded her how long it took to learn to ride a cycle. So Meenal tried a third time, with layers of sand, charcoal and pebbles. This time, muddy water came out clear. She did not win first prize, but the judges praised her patience. Meenal realised that trying again was a prize in itself.

What was wrong with her second model?
    (a) It leaked (b) It broke (c) It was too big (d) It was too slow
  12. 12.A volcano is an opening in the Earth’s crust. Deep under the ground, rocks are so hot that they melt. This melted rock is called magma. When pressure builds up, magma pushes its way to the surface. Once it comes out, it is called lava. Lava can be hotter than 1,000 degrees Celsius. When it cools, it hardens into new rock. India’s only active volcano is on Barren Island in the Andaman Sea.

What happens to lava when it cools?
    (a) It becomes water (b) It melts again (c) It turns into gas (d) It hardens into rock
