  1. 1.Plastic is cheap, light and strong. But most plastic does not rot away like leaves or fruit peels. A plastic bag may stay in the soil for hundreds of years. Plastic thrown on the road often blocks drains during the monsoon. Cows and other animals sometimes swallow plastic with food scraps. In the sea, turtles can mistake floating bags for jellyfish. We can help by carrying cloth bags and saying no to straws. Sorting dry and wet waste at home also helps.

What can plastic on roads block during the monsoon?
    (a) clouds (b) drains (c) trains (d) rivers
  2. 2.Sound is made when something vibrates, or moves quickly back and forth. When you pluck a sitar string, it vibrates and makes a sound. The vibrations travel through the air to our ears. Sound can also travel through water and solids. In fact, it moves faster through solids than through air. Sound cannot travel through empty space, where there is no air. That is why space is completely silent. Loud sounds for a long time can harm our hearing.

What does “vibrates” mean in the passage?
    (a) Stays still (b) Becomes hot (c) Moves back and forth (d) Breaks apart
  3. 3.The Moon is Earth’s only natural satellite. It goes around the Earth once in about a month. The Moon does not have its own light. It shines because it reflects light from the Sun. As it moves, we see different amounts of its lit side. These changing shapes are called phases. On a full moon night, we see the whole bright face. On a new moon night, we can hardly see it at all.

    Why does the Moon shine?
    (a) It reflects sunlight (b) It has its own light (c) It is on fire (d) It is made of ice
  4. 4.Beside the village well it stands,
With roots that hang like old men’s hands.
The farmers rest beneath its shade,
Where children’s games and swings are made.
The parrots chatter on its crown,
The squirrels scamper up and down.
A hundred summers it has seen,
And still its leaves are fresh and green.

    Where does the tree stand?
    (a) In the city (b) Near the river (c) Beside the village well (d) On a hill
  5. 5.The Sun gives us a huge amount of energy every day. Solar panels can turn sunlight into electricity. They are made of special cells that work when light falls on them. Many homes in India now have solar panels on their roofs. Some villages use solar lamps after dark. Solar energy does not make smoke, so it keeps the air clean. Unlike coal, it will never run out. However, panels make less power on cloudy days.

Why does solar energy keep the air clean?
    (a) It uses coal (b) It makes no smoke (c) It runs out fast (d) It is very cheap
  6. 6.Some clouds are fluffy, soft and white,
They sail like ships in morning light.
Some clouds are dark and full of rain,
They rumble over hill and plain.
Some stretch like feathers, thin and high,
Brushed gently on the summer sky.
I lie on the grass and watch them go,
    A lion, a ship, a fat buffalo!

Which animal shapes does the poet see?
    (a) A tiger and a cow (b) A lion and a buffalo (c) A cat and a dog (d) A bear and a deer
  7. 7.The night train rattles through the dark,
Past sleeping towns and a silent park.
Its windows glow, a golden line,
It whistles past the hills of pine.
    Inside, the passengers softly snore,
A baby giggles near the door.
And when the morning sun is near,
It whistles, “Wake up! Delhi’s here!”

    Which word rhymes with “line”?
    (a) dark (b) snore (c) pine (d) near
  8. 8.In many Indian cities, people face water shortages in summer. Rainwater harvesting is one simple answer. Rain falling on rooftops is collected through pipes. It is then stored in tanks or sent into the ground through pits. Water sent into the ground raises the level of water in wells. A single roof can collect thousands of litres in one monsoon. Some states have made rainwater harvesting compulsory for new buildings. Saving rain today means more water tomorrow.

    What does “compulsory” mean here?
    (a) Done for fun (b) Not allowed (c) Must be done (d) Very costly
  9. 9.High in the hills where the cold winds blow,
Our little village sleeps in snow.
The yaks stand still with frosty hair,
The smoke curls up in the morning air.
We melt the ice to boil our tea,
And count the stars that shine for free.
The city has its lights, it’s true,
But we have mountains, white and blue.

What does the poet say the city has?
    (a) Its lights (b) Its mountains (c) Its snow (d) Its yaks
  10. 10.When the power goes and the night is black,
We gather round on the old jute sack.
    Grandfather lights a candle stub,
And tells of a tiger and her cub,
Of a clever crow and a foolish king,
Of a magic flute and a golden ring.
We hardly notice the hours fly,
Until the lights come back — oh my!

Which animals are in one of his stories?
    (a) A dog and a cat (b) A deer and a fox (c) A lion and a goat (d) A tiger and her cub
  11. 11.The monsoon is a seasonal wind that brings rain to India. In summer, the land heats up faster than the sea. Moist winds then blow from the sea towards the land. The south-west monsoon usually reaches Kerala in early June. Over the next few weeks, it spreads across most of the country. Farmers wait eagerly for it because many crops need its rain. Rice, for example, grows in fields full of water. A weak monsoon can mean a poor harvest.

What does “eagerly” mean in the passage?
    (a) Lazily (b) Sadly (c) Angrily (d) Keenly
  12. 12.On a stormy evening, Riya heard a soft whimper outside the gate. A tiny puppy was shivering in the rain. Her mother was worried that it might be ill. Still, they dried it with an old towel and gave it warm milk. The next day, they took it to the animal doctor. The doctor said the puppy was healthy, just hungry and cold. Riya named him Bijli because he arrived during a thunderstorm. Now Bijli follows her everywhere.

    Why was her mother worried?
    (a) It might bite (b) It was too big (c) The puppy might be ill (d) It was too noisy
