  1. 1.Lightning is a giant spark of electricity in the sky. It happens when electric charges build up inside storm clouds. A flash of lightning heats the air around it very quickly. The hot air expands with a loud bang, which we hear as thunder. Light travels much faster than sound. That is why we see the flash before we hear the thunder. During a thunderstorm, stay indoors and away from tall trees. Standing under a tree is not safe, as lightning often strikes tall objects.

Why do we see the flash before we hear the thunder?
    (a) Clouds block sound (b) Thunder is quiet (c) Light travels faster (d) Sound travels faster
  2. 2.Every winter, thousands of birds fly to India from colder lands. These travellers are called migratory birds. Many of them come from Siberia and Central Asia. They escape the freezing cold and find food in our lakes and wetlands. Bharatpur in Rajasthan and Chilika Lake in Odisha are famous places to see them. Flamingos, cranes and ducks are among the visitors. In spring, the birds fly back to breed. Protecting wetlands keeps their winter homes safe.

Why do the birds fly back in spring?
    (a) To rest (b) To eat fish (c) To breed (d) To find snow
  3. 3.Kabir found a brown wallet near the bus stop. Inside were some money and a card with an address. His friend Sonu said, “Keep it, nobody saw you.” Kabir felt uneasy about that idea. He walked twenty minutes to the address on the card. An old man opened the door and almost cried with relief. The wallet held his pension for the whole month. He thanked Kabir again and again. Kabir walked home feeling lighter than air. Honesty, he learnt, brings its own reward.

Why was the old man so relieved?
    (a) It was a gift (b) It had his photos (c) It held his pension (d) It was new
  4. 4.In many Indian cities, people face water shortages in summer. Rainwater harvesting is one simple answer. Rain falling on rooftops is collected through pipes. It is then stored in tanks or sent into the ground through pits. Water sent into the ground raises the level of water in wells. A single roof can collect thousands of litres in one monsoon. Some states have made rainwater harvesting compulsory for new buildings. Saving rain today means more water tomorrow.

What rises when water is sent into the ground?
    (a) The roof height (b) Rainfall (c) Water in wells (d) Soil heat
  5. 5.Ayesha lives across the street,
We share our pencils, share our treats.
When I was sick with fever high,
She brought me notes and said, “Don’t cry.”
We sometimes fight about a game,
But by the evening, we’re the same.
A friend is like a shady tree,
That’s always there for you and me.

What did Ayesha bring when the poet was sick?
    (a) Medicine (b) Flowers (c) Notes (d) Sweets
  6. 6.On a stormy evening, Riya heard a soft whimper outside the gate. A tiny puppy was shivering in the rain. Her mother was worried that it might be ill. Still, they dried it with an old towel and gave it warm milk. The next day, they took it to the animal doctor. The doctor said the puppy was healthy, just hungry and cold. Riya named him Bijli because he arrived during a thunderstorm. Now Bijli follows her everywhere.

What did Riya hear outside the gate?
    (a) A loud bark (b) A car horn (c) A soft whimper (d) A knock
  7. 7.Mangroves are trees that grow in salty water along the coast. Their roots stick out of the mud like knobbly fingers. These roots help the trees breathe in wet, airless soil. Mangrove forests protect the coast from strong waves and storms. They also give shelter to fish, crabs and birds. The Sundarbans, shared by India and Bangladesh, is the largest mangrove forest in the world. It is home to the Royal Bengal tiger. Cutting mangroves leaves the coast open to damage.

In “It is home to the Royal Bengal tiger”, what does “It” refer to?
    (a) The mud (b) The coast (c) A crab (d) The Sundarbans
  8. 8.The Moon is Earth’s only natural satellite. It goes around the Earth once in about a month. The Moon does not have its own light. It shines because it reflects light from the Sun. As it moves, we see different amounts of its lit side. These changing shapes are called phases. On a full moon night, we see the whole bright face. On a new moon night, we can hardly see it at all.
