  1. 1.Lightning is a giant spark of electricity in the sky. It happens when electric charges build up inside storm clouds. A flash of lightning heats the air around it very quickly. The hot air expands with a loud bang, which we hear as thunder. Light travels much faster than sound. That is why we see the flash before we hear the thunder. During a thunderstorm, stay indoors and away from tall trees. Standing under a tree is not safe, as lightning often strikes tall objects.

    What is lightning?
    (a) A spark of electricity (b) A burst of rain (c) A gust of wind (d) A falling star
  2. 2.The sky turned grey, the wind grew strong,
The peacock sang its happy song.
Then down came drops, first one, then ten,
Then rain, and rain, and rain again!
The dusty lanes turned into streams,
The paper boats sailed on our dreams.
The thirsty fields began to drink,
And everything turned green, I think.

Which bird sang when the sky turned grey?
    (a) The sparrow (b) The peacock (c) The crow (d) The parrot
  3. 3.Green plants make their own food. This process is called photosynthesis. Leaves take in carbon dioxide from the air through tiny holes. Roots take up water from the soil. A green substance in the leaves, called chlorophyll, traps sunlight. Using the energy of sunlight, the leaf turns water and carbon dioxide into sugar. Oxygen is given out into the air. Animals and people breathe in this oxygen.

What is the main idea of the passage?
    (a) Why animals breathe (b) How plants make food (c) Why leaves fall (d) How roots grow long
  4. 4.Vihaan was batting in the final over of the colony cricket match. He edged the ball, and it brushed his bat before the keeper caught it. Nobody else heard the sound, and the umpire said not out. Vihaan’s team needed just four runs to win. Still, Vihaan walked off the field on his own. The other team was stunned. They lost the match, but players from both sides shook his hand. Vihaan felt that fair play mattered more than a trophy.

Why did Vihaan walk off the field?
    (a) He knew he was out (b) It began to rain (c) He was hurt (d) He was tired
  5. 5.Arjun was always in a hurry. One morning, he took a shortcut across the railway tracks to reach school early. A signalman shouted at him to stop. Seconds later, a goods train thundered past. Arjun’s legs were shaking as he stepped back. The signalman explained that trains are much faster than they look. From that day, Arjun always used the footbridge. He now says it is better to be late than to be sorry.

Who shouted at Arjun to stop?
    (a) His mother (b) A train driver (c) A signalman (d) His teacher
  6. 6.The Sun gives us a huge amount of energy every day. Solar panels can turn sunlight into electricity. They are made of special cells that work when light falls on them. Many homes in India now have solar panels on their roofs. Some villages use solar lamps after dark. Solar energy does not make smoke, so it keeps the air clean. Unlike coal, it will never run out. However, panels make less power on cloudy days.

Why does solar energy keep the air clean?
    (a) It makes no smoke (b) It uses coal (c) It runs out fast (d) It is very cheap
  7. 7.With coloured powder in a tray,
I start my rangoli at break of day.
    A dot, a line, a curve, a swirl,
A peacock’s tail begins to twirl.
Red and yellow, green and white,
I fill each petal, neat and bright.
My little brother claps with glee,
“Now make a rangoli just for me!”

    What shape begins to twirl?
    (a) A peacock’s tail (b) A fish fin (c) A flower stem (d) A snake
  8. 8.Priya was chosen to recite a poem at the Republic Day function. She practised it perfectly at home. But on the day, when she saw the huge crowd, her mind went blank. Her hands trembled and her throat felt dry. Then she spotted her friend Joel in the front row, smiling and nodding. Priya took a deep breath and began again. This time, the words flowed easily. 9. 9.A vaccine helps the body fight a disease before the disease attacks. It contains a weak or harmless form of a germ. The body’s defence system learns to recognise it. It then makes special fighters called antibodies. Later, if the real germ enters, the body knows how to beat it quickly. Children in India get vaccines against polio, measles and other diseases. Most vaccines are given as injections, but the polio vaccine can be given as drops. Vaccines have saved millions of lives.

How can the polio vaccine be given?
    (a) As a tablet (b) As drops (c) As a cream (d) As a bandage
  10. 10.A new girl named Lakshmi joined Tenzin’s class in July. She had moved from a village in Tamil Nadu and spoke little Hindi. At lunch, she sat alone under the neem tree. By August, the two were the best of friends.

    (a) By December (b) Next year (c) In July (d) By August

  12. 12.Mangroves are trees that grow in salty water along the coast. Their roots stick out of the mud like knobbly fingers. These roots help the trees breathe in wet, airless soil. Mangrove forests protect the coast from strong waves and storms. They also give shelter to fish, crabs and birds. The Sundarbans, shared by India and Bangladesh, is the largest mangrove forest in the world. It is home to the Royal Bengal tiger. Cutting mangroves leaves the coast open to damage.
