1.Lightning is a giant spark of electricity in the sky. It happens when electric charges build up inside storm clouds. A flash of lightning heats the air around it very quickly. The hot air expands with a loud bang, which we hear as thunder. Light travels much faster than sound. That is why we see the flash before we hear the thunder. During a thunderstorm, stay indoors and away from tall trees. Standing under a tree is not safe, as lightning often strikes tall objects.
Why is standing under a tree unsafe? (a) It strikes tall objects (b) Birds live there (c) Trees fall in rain (d) Leaves are wet -
2.With coloured powder in a tray,
I start my rangoli at break of day.
A dot, a line, a curve, a swirl,
A peacock’s tail begins to twirl.
Red and yellow, green and white,
I fill each petal, neat and bright.
My little brother claps with glee,
“Now make a rangoli just for me!”
What shape begins to twirl? (a) A peacock’s tail (b) A flower stem (c) A snake (d) A fish fin -
3.We dug a patch behind the hall,
Beside the old brick boundary wall.
We sowed some beans, some okra too,
And watered them till they grew and grew.
Then caterpillars came to munch,
They ate our leaves for breakfast, lunch!
We did not spray, we picked them out,
And now our garden’s green throughout.
Which word rhymes with “munch”? (a) wall (b) out (c) lunch (d) too -
4.Earthworms are called the farmer’s friends. They dig tunnels as they move through the soil. These tunnels let air and water reach plant roots. Earthworms eat dead leaves and bits of rotting plants. Their waste, called castings, makes the soil rich. A field with many earthworms is usually healthy. Chemical sprays can kill these helpful creatures. So many farmers now use natural manure instead.
What can kill earthworms? (a) Natural manure (b) Dead leaves (c) Chemical sprays (d) Rain water -
5.A volcano is an opening in the Earth’s crust. Deep under the ground, rocks are so hot that they melt. This melted rock is called magma. When pressure builds up, magma pushes its way to the surface. Once it comes out, it is called lava. Lava can be hotter than 1,000 degrees Celsius. When it cools, it hardens into new rock. India’s only active volcano is on Barren Island in the Andaman Sea.
Why does magma push its way to the surface? (a) The wind pulls it (b) Rain falls on it (c) Pressure builds up (d) It cools down -
6.Meenal wanted to build a water filter for the science fair. Her first model leaked, and her second one was too slow. She almost gave up. Her grandmother reminded her how long it took to learn to ride a cycle. So Meenal tried a third time, with layers of sand, charcoal and pebbles. This time, muddy water came out clear. She did not win first prize, but the judges praised her patience. Meenal realised that trying again was a prize in itself.
What did Meenal want to build? (a) A solar car (b) A water filter (c) A volcano model (d) A robot -
7.Kabir found a brown wallet near the bus stop. Inside were some money and a card with an address. His friend Sonu said, “Keep it, nobody saw you.” Kabir felt uneasy about that idea. He walked twenty minutes to the address on the card. An old man opened the door and almost cried with relief. The wallet held his pension for the whole month. He thanked Kabir again and again. Kabir walked home feeling lighter than air. Honesty, he learnt, brings its own reward.
How did Kabir feel walking home? (a) Tired and sad (b) Scared (c) Lighter than air (d) Angry with Sonu -
8.Green plants make their own food. This process is called photosynthesis. Leaves take in carbon dioxide from the air through tiny holes. Roots take up water from the soil. A green substance in the leaves, called chlorophyll, traps sunlight. Using the energy of sunlight, the leaf turns water and carbon dioxide into sugar. Oxygen is given out into the air. Animals and people breathe in this oxygen.
What is the main idea of the passage? (a) Why leaves fall (b) How roots grow long (c) How plants make food (d) Why animals breathe -
9.My grandmother’s hands are wrinkled and brown,
They knead the dough when the sun goes down.
They plait my hair before I go,
They plant the seeds in a tidy row.
They stitch my shirt when a button is lost,
They warm my cheeks in the winter frost.
Her hands are old, but they never rest,
Of all the hands, I love hers best.
How are grandmother’s hands described? (a) Soft and pink (b) Wrinkled and brown (c) Smooth and white (d) Cold and blue -
10.Bees visit flowers to collect sweet nectar. While they feed, yellow dust called pollen sticks to their hairy bodies. When a bee flies to the next flower, some pollen rubs off. This carrying of pollen is called pollination. Pollination helps plants make fruits and seeds. Mangoes, apples and many vegetables depend on it. Without bees, farmers would harvest far less food. So bees are tiny helpers of every farm.
Why does pollen stick to bees? (a) Their wings are wet (b) They are very sticky (c) They eat it (d) Their bodies are hairy -

Which word rhymes with “rest”? (a) lost (b) best (c) row (d) frost -
12.A magnet attracts things made of iron, nickel or cobalt. Every magnet has two ends called poles: a north pole and a south pole. If you bring two north poles together, they push each other away. A north pole and a south pole pull towards each other. In short, like poles repel and unlike poles attract. A magnet hung freely always points north and south. Sailors once used this idea to make the compass. Magnets also work inside fans, speakers and fridge doors.
What did sailors make using this idea? (a) The sail (b) The compass (c) The map (d) The clock
