1.My grandmother’s hands are wrinkled and brown,
They knead the dough when the sun goes down.
They plait my hair before I go,
They plant the seeds in a tidy row.
They stitch my shirt when a button is lost,
They warm my cheeks in the winter frost.
Her hands are old, but they never rest,
Of all the hands, I love hers best.
Which word rhymes with “rest”? (a) lost (b) row (c) frost (d) best -
2.The Earth spins like a top on an imaginary line called its axis. One full spin takes about twenty-four hours. As the Earth spins, one half faces the Sun and has day. The other half faces away and has night. The Earth also moves around the Sun. One trip around the Sun takes about 365 days, which is one year. The tilt of the Earth’s axis gives us seasons. So spinning gives us day and night, while the tilt and the yearly trip give us seasons.
What causes day and night? (a) The Moon moving (b) Clouds covering Sun (c) The Sun switching off (d) The Earth spinning -
3.Lightning is a giant spark of electricity in the sky. It happens when electric charges build up inside storm clouds. A flash of lightning heats the air around it very quickly. The hot air expands with a loud bang, which we hear as thunder. Light travels much faster than sound. That is why we see the flash before we hear the thunder. During a thunderstorm, stay indoors and away from tall trees. Standing under a tree is not safe, as lightning often strikes tall objects.
What is lightning? (a) A gust of wind (b) A spark of electricity (c) A falling star (d) A burst of rain -
4.Bees visit flowers to collect sweet nectar. While they feed, yellow dust called pollen sticks to their hairy bodies. When a bee flies to the next flower, some pollen rubs off. This carrying of pollen is called pollination. Pollination helps plants make fruits and seeds. Mangoes, apples and many vegetables depend on it. Without bees, farmers would harvest far less food. So bees are tiny helpers of every farm.
What would happen without bees? (a) Farms become quieter (b) Flowers grow bigger (c) More rain would fall (d) Farmers get less food -
5.The night before my maths exam,
I sat as quiet as a lamb.
The numbers danced inside my head,
They followed me right into bed.
But Mother said, “Just do your best,
Then close your eyes and get some rest.”
I slept, I woke, I wrote with care,
And found the answers waiting there.
When is the poem set? (a) On a holiday (b) On result day (c) After the exam (d) Night before maths exam -
6.The Sun heats water in seas, rivers and lakes. The water turns into an invisible gas called water vapour. This change is called evaporation. High in the sky, the vapour cools and turns into tiny drops of water. These drops join together to form clouds. When the drops become too heavy, they fall as rain. This is called precipitation. Rainwater flows back into rivers and seas, and the cycle begins again.
What is the change of water into water vapour called? (a) freezing (b) evaporation (c) melting (d) precipitation -
7.The waves come running up the sand,
They tickle toes and touch my hand.
They leave behind a shell or two,
Some pink, some white, and one bright blue.
The fishing boats go out at dawn,
And come back home when day is gone.
The seagulls cry, the breezes blow,
I wish I never had to go.
What do the waves leave behind? (a) A shell or two (b) A fishing boat (c) A starfish (d) Some seaweed -
8.The Sun gives us a huge amount of energy every day. Solar panels can turn sunlight into electricity. They are made of special cells that work when light falls on them. Many homes in India now have solar panels on their roofs. Some villages use solar lamps after dark. Solar energy does not make smoke, so it keeps the air clean. Unlike coal, it will never run out. However, panels make less power on cloudy days.
What do solar panels turn sunlight into? (a) smoke (b) coal (c) water (d) electricity -
9.Meenal wanted to build a water filter for the science fair. Her first model leaked, and her second one was too slow. She almost gave up. Her grandmother reminded her how long it took to learn to ride a cycle. So Meenal tried a third time, with layers of sand, charcoal and pebbles. This time, muddy water came out clear. She did not win first prize, but the judges praised her patience. Meenal realised that trying again was a prize in itself.
What did Grandmother remind her of? (a) Her school exams (b) A famous scientist (c) A cooking recipe (d) Learning to ride a cycle -
10.Anjali was playing ball indoors when she knocked over her mother’s favourite vase. It broke into three pieces. Her younger brother Vivek said they could hide the pieces under the bed. Anjali was tempted, but she knew that would be dishonest. When her mother came home, Anjali told her the truth. Her mother was sad about the vase. But she hugged Anjali and said she was proud of her honesty. Together, they glued the pieces and used it as a pen stand.
What is the vase used as now? (a) A flower pot (b) A money box (c) A lamp (d) A pen stand -
11.Arjun was always in a hurry. One morning, he took a shortcut across the railway tracks to reach school early. A signalman shouted at him to stop. Seconds later, a goods train thundered past. 12.With coloured powder in a tray,

Red and yellow, green and white,
I fill each petal, neat and bright.
My little brother claps with glee,
“Now make a rangoli just for me!”
