  1. 1.The Sun gives us a huge amount of energy every day. Solar panels can turn sunlight into electricity. They are made of special cells that work when light falls on them. Many homes in India now have solar panels on their roofs. Some villages use solar lamps after dark. Solar energy does not make smoke, so it keeps the air clean. Unlike coal, it will never run out. However, panels make less power on cloudy days.

When do panels make less power?
    (a) In summer (b) On sunny days (c) At noon (d) On cloudy days
  2. 2.Every living thing needs food for energy. Plants make their own food using sunlight. A grasshopper eats grass. A frog eats the grasshopper. A snake eats the frog, and an eagle eats the snake. This link of who eats whom is called a food chain. Every food chain begins with a green plant. If one link disappears, the whole chain is affected.

    What does the frog eat?
    (a) The grasshopper (b) The grass (c) The snake (d) The eagle
  3. 3.Some clouds are fluffy, soft and white,
They sail like ships in morning light.
Some clouds are dark and full of rain,
They rumble over hill and plain.
Some stretch like feathers, thin and high,
Brushed gently on the summer sky.

    A lion, a ship, a fat buffalo!

What do the white clouds sail like?
    (a) Ships (b) Fish (c) Kites (d) Birds
  4. 4.Sound is made when something vibrates, or moves quickly back and forth. When you pluck a sitar string, it vibrates and makes a sound. The vibrations travel through the air to our ears. Sound can also travel through water and solids. In fact, it moves faster through solids than through air. Sound cannot travel through empty space, where there is no air. That is why space is completely silent. Loud sounds for a long time can harm our hearing.

    What can harm our hearing?
    (a) Long loud sounds (b) Bird songs (c) Quiet rooms (d) Soft music
  5. 5.The monsoon is a seasonal wind that brings rain to India. In summer, the land heats up faster than the sea. Moist winds then blow from the sea towards the land. The south-west monsoon usually reaches Kerala in early June. Over the next few weeks, it spreads across most of the country. Farmers wait eagerly for it because many crops need its rain. Rice, for example, grows in fields full of water. A weak monsoon can mean a poor harvest.

What heats up faster in summer?
    (a) The land (b) The rain (c) The sea (d) The clouds
  6. 6.The Sun heats water in seas, rivers and lakes. The water turns into an invisible gas called water vapour. This change is called evaporation. High in the sky, the vapour cools and turns into tiny drops of water. These drops join together to form clouds. When the drops become too heavy, they fall as rain. This is called precipitation. Rainwater flows back into rivers and seas, and the cycle begins again.

True or false: Water vapour can be easily seen.
    (a) True (b) False

Nobody else heard the sound, and the umpire said not out. Vihaan’s team needed just four runs to win. Still, Vihaan walked off the field on his own. The other team was stunned. They lost the match, but players from both sides shook his hand. Vihaan felt that fair play mattered more than a trophy.
