  1. 1.Plastic is cheap, light and strong. But most plastic does not rot away like leaves or fruit peels. A plastic bag may stay in the soil for hundreds of years. Plastic thrown on the road often blocks drains during the monsoon. Cows and other animals sometimes swallow plastic with food scraps. In the sea, turtles can mistake floating bags for jellyfish. We can help by carrying cloth bags and saying no to straws. Sorting dry and wet waste at home also helps.

What can turtles mistake floating bags for?
    (a) rocks (b) seaweed (c) jellyfish (d) fish eggs
  2. 2.The Sun heats water in seas, rivers and lakes. The water turns into an invisible gas called water vapour. This change is called evaporation. High in the sky, the vapour cools and turns into tiny drops of water. These drops join together to form clouds. When the drops become too heavy, they fall as rain. This is called precipitation. Rainwater flows back into rivers and seas, and the cycle begins again.

What heats the water in seas and rivers?
    (a) The wind (b) The Moon (c) The clouds (d) The Sun
  3. 3.The monsoon is a seasonal wind that brings rain to India. In summer, the land heats up faster than the sea. Moist winds then blow from the sea towards the land. The south-west monsoon usually reaches Kerala in early June. Over the next few weeks, it spreads across most of the country. Farmers wait eagerly for it because many crops need its rain. Rice, for example, grows in fields full of water. A weak monsoon can mean a poor harvest.

What heats up faster in summer?
    (a) The sea (b) The rain (c) The land (d) The clouds
  4. 4.Vihaan was batting in the final over of the colony cricket match. He edged the ball, and it brushed his bat before the keeper caught it. Nobody else heard the sound, and the umpire said not out. Vihaan’s team needed just four runs to win. Still, Vihaan walked off the field on his own. The other team was stunned. They lost the match, but players from both sides shook his hand. Vihaan felt that fair play mattered more than a trophy.

What did Vihaan feel mattered more than a trophy?
    (a) Winning (b) His bat (c) Fair play (d) Big hits
  5. 5.Mangroves are trees that grow in salty water along the coast. Their roots stick out of the mud like knobbly fingers. These roots help the trees breathe in wet, airless soil. Mangrove forests protect the coast from strong waves and storms. They also give shelter to fish, crabs and birds. The Sundarbans, shared by India and Bangladesh, is the largest mangrove forest in the world. It is home to the Royal Bengal tiger. Cutting mangroves leaves the coast open to damage.

In “It is home to the Royal Bengal tiger”, what does “It” refer to?
    (a) The coast (b) The Sundarbans (c) A crab (d) The mud
  6. 6.The sky turned grey, the wind grew strong,
The peacock sang its happy song.
Then down came drops, first one, then ten,
Then rain, and rain, and rain again!
The dusty lanes turned into streams,
The paper boats sailed on our dreams.
The thirsty fields began to drink,
And everything turned green, I think.

Which bird sang when the sky turned grey?
    (a) The sparrow (b) The parrot (c) The crow (d) The peacock
  7. 7.Earthworms are called the farmer’s friends. They dig tunnels as they move through the soil. These tunnels let air and water reach plant roots. Earthworms eat dead leaves and bits of rotting plants. Their waste, called castings, makes the soil rich. A field with many earthworms is usually healthy. Chemical sprays can kill these helpful creatures. So many farmers now use natural manure instead.

    What do earthworms eat?
    (a) Fresh fruit (b) Grain seeds (c) Live insects (d) Dead leaves
  8. 8.Sound is made when something vibrates, or moves quickly back and forth. When you pluck a sitar string, it vibrates and makes a sound. The vibrations travel through the air to our ears. Sound can also travel through water and solids. In fact, it moves faster through solids than through air. Sound cannot travel through empty space, where there is no air. That is why space is completely silent. Loud sounds for a long time can harm our hearing.

What does “vibrates” mean in the passage?
    (a) Becomes hot (b) Breaks apart (c) Stays still (d) Moves back and forth
  9. 9.Gurpreet was chosen as captain of the school hockey team. In the first match, she tried to score every goal herself. The team lost badly. Her coach told her that a captain’s job is to help everyone play well. In the next match, Gurpreet passed the ball more often. Her teammate Neha scored two goals from her passes. The team won, and Gurpreet felt prouder than if she had scored herself. She learnt that teamwork wins matches.

    What lesson did Gurpreet learn?
    (a) Hockey is easy (b) Teamwork wins matches (c) Practice is boring (d) Captains must score
  10. 10.A vaccine helps the body fight a disease before the disease attacks. It contains a weak or harmless form of a germ. The body’s defence system learns to recognise it. It then makes special fighters called antibodies. Later, if the real germ enters, the body knows how to beat it quickly. Children in India get vaccines against polio, measles and other diseases. Most vaccines are given as injections, but the polio vaccine can be given as drops. Vaccines have saved millions of lives.

True or false: Vaccines have saved millions of lives.
    (a) True (b) False
  11. 11.My grandmother’s hands are wrinkled and brown,
They knead the dough when the sun goes down.
They plait my hair before I go,
They plant the seeds in a tidy row.
They stitch my shirt when a button is lost,
They warm my cheeks in the winter frost.
Her hands are old, but they never rest,
Of all the hands, I love hers best.

How does the poet feel about grandmother’s hands?
    (a) Loves them most (b) Does not care (c) Finds them ugly (d) Is afraid of them
  12. 12.The waves come running up the sand,
They tickle toes and touch my hand.
They leave behind a shell or two,
Some pink, some white, and one bright blue.
The fishing boats go out at dawn,
And come back home when day is gone.
The seagulls cry, the breezes blow,
I wish I never had to go.
