  1. 1.Kabir found a brown wallet near the bus stop. Inside were some money and a card with an address. His friend Sonu said, “Keep it, nobody saw you.” Kabir felt uneasy about that idea. He walked twenty minutes to the address on the card. An old man opened the door and almost cried with relief. The wallet held his pension for the whole month. He thanked Kabir again and again. Kabir walked home feeling lighter than air. Honesty, he learnt, brings its own reward.

Why was the old man so relieved?
    (a) It was new (b) It held his pension (c) It was a gift (d) It had his photos
  2. 2.Sound is made when something vibrates, or moves quickly back and forth. When you pluck a sitar string, it vibrates and makes a sound. The vibrations travel through the air to our ears. Sound can also travel through water and solids. In fact, it moves faster through solids than through air. Sound cannot travel through empty space, where there is no air. That is why space is completely silent. Loud sounds for a long time can harm our hearing.

What does “vibrates” mean in the passage?
    (a) Stays still (b) Becomes hot (c) Breaks apart (d) Moves back and forth
  3. 3.Some clouds are fluffy, soft and white,
They sail like ships in morning light.
Some clouds are dark and full of rain,
They rumble over hill and plain.
Some stretch like feathers, thin and high,
Brushed gently on the summer sky.
I lie on the grass and watch them go,
    A lion, a ship, a fat buffalo!

What do the white clouds sail like?
    (a) Kites (b) Ships (c) Birds (d) Fish
  4. 4.High in the hills where the cold winds blow,
Our little village sleeps in snow.
The yaks stand still with frosty hair,
The smoke curls up in the morning air.
We melt the ice to boil our tea,
And count the stars that shine for free.
The city has its lights, it’s true,
But we have mountains, white and blue.

    Where is the village?
    (a) In a big city (b) In a desert (c) High in the hills (d) By the sea
  5. 5.Mangroves are trees that grow in salty water along the coast. Their roots stick out of the mud like knobbly fingers. These roots help the trees breathe in wet, airless soil. Mangrove forests protect the coast from strong waves and storms. They also give shelter to fish, crabs and birds. The Sundarbans, shared by India and Bangladesh, is the largest mangrove forest in the world. It is home to the Royal Bengal tiger. Cutting mangroves leaves the coast open to damage.

    Where do mangroves grow?
    (a) In salty coastal water (b) In deserts (c) On high mountains (d) In cold forests
  6. 6.In many Indian cities, people face water shortages in summer. Rainwater harvesting is one simple answer. Rain falling on rooftops is collected through pipes. It is then stored in tanks or sent into the ground through pits. Water sent into the ground raises the level of water in wells. A single roof can collect thousands of litres in one monsoon. Some states have made rainwater harvesting compulsory for new buildings. Saving rain today means more water tomorrow.

When do people in cities face water shortages?
    (a) In the monsoon (b) In summer (c) At night (d) In winter
  7. 7.A new girl named Lakshmi joined Tenzin’s class in July. She had moved from a village in Tamil Nadu and spoke little Hindi. At lunch, she sat alone under the neem tree. Some children laughed at her accent. Tenzin remembered his own first day in Delhi, when he too had felt lost. He sat beside her and shared his momos. Lakshmi taught him a few Tamil words in return. By August, the two were the best of friends.

  8. 8.I made a kite of red and gold,
With paper thin and string to hold.
I ran across the open ground,
And up it rose without a sound.
It danced above the temple tower,
It climbed and climbed for half an hour.
Then snap! The string broke in the breeze,
My kite flew off beyond the trees.

It took me to my school each day,
And never once complained, I say.

But I still think this bike’s the best.

    (a) The milkman’s (b) Father’s (c) The teacher’s (d) Grandmother’s

He now says it is better to be late than to be sorry.

    (a) The shortcut (b) A bicycle (c) A taxi (d) The footbridge
  12. 12.The night train rattles through the dark,

Its windows glow, a golden line,
It whistles past the hills of pine.
    Inside, the passengers softly snore,
