  1. 1.The Earth spins like a top on an imaginary line called its axis. One full spin takes about twenty-four hours. As the Earth spins, one half faces the Sun and has day. The other half faces away and has night. The Earth also moves around the Sun. One trip around the Sun takes about 365 days, which is one year. The tilt of the Earth’s axis gives us seasons. So spinning gives us day and night, while the tilt and the yearly trip give us seasons.

What gives us seasons, along with the yearly trip?
    (a) The clouds (b) The tilt of the axis (c) The ocean (d) The Moon
  2. 2.High in the hills where the cold winds blow,
Our little village sleeps in snow.
The yaks stand still with frosty hair,
The smoke curls up in the morning air.
We melt the ice to boil our tea,
And count the stars that shine for free.
The city has its lights, it’s true,
But we have mountains, white and blue.

Which animals stand still with frosty hair?
    (a) Horses (b) Yaks (c) Goats (d) Camels
  3. 3.Arjun was always in a hurry. One morning, he took a shortcut across the railway tracks to reach school early. A signalman shouted at him to stop. Seconds later, a goods train thundered past. Arjun’s legs were shaking as he stepped back. The signalman explained that trains are much faster than they look. From that day, Arjun always used the footbridge. He now says it is better to be late than to be sorry.

    What happened seconds later?
    (a) A bus arrived (b) The bell rang (c) A goods train passed (d) It started raining
  4. 4.Sana lived in a flat in Mumbai with no garden. She longed to grow her own vegetables. Her father found some old paint buckets and filled them with soil. Sana planted chillies, spinach and tomatoes on the terrace. She watered them every morning before school. Pigeons pecked at the seedlings, so she covered them with a net. In two months, she picked her first spinach leaves. Her mother cooked them for dinner, and Sana thought they tasted better than any others.

Why did Sana cover the seedlings with a net?
    (a) Pigeons pecked them (b) It rained a lot (c) It was too sunny (d) Cats sat on them
  5. 5.Plastic is cheap, light and strong. But most plastic does not rot away like leaves or fruit peels. A plastic bag may stay in the soil for hundreds of years. Plastic thrown on the road often blocks drains during the monsoon. Cows and other animals sometimes swallow plastic with food scraps. In the sea, turtles can mistake floating bags for jellyfish. We can help by carrying cloth bags and saying no to straws. Sorting dry and wet waste at home also helps.

What can plastic on roads block during the monsoon?
    (a) trains (b) rivers (c) clouds (d) drains
  6. 6.Sound is made when something vibrates, or moves quickly back and forth. When you pluck a sitar string, it vibrates and makes a sound. The vibrations travel through the air to our ears. Sound can also travel through water and solids. In fact, it moves faster through solids than through air. Sound cannot travel through empty space, where there is no air. That is why space is completely silent. Loud sounds for a long time can harm our hearing.

    Why is space completely silent?
    (a) It is too cold (b) It is too dark (c) It is too big (d) There is no air
  7. 7.Round and round the wheel goes spinning,
A lump of clay is just beginning.
The potter’s fingers press and shape,
    A pot appears, a jar, a plate.
He sets them out to dry in sun,
And bakes them hard when they are done.
From muddy earth beneath our feet,
He makes the bowls from which we eat.

What does he do to the pots after drying them?
    (a) Washes them (b) Bakes them hard (c) Paints them (d) Breaks them
  8. 8.Green plants make their own food. This process is called photosynthesis. Leaves take in carbon dioxide from the air through tiny holes. Roots take up water from the soil. A green substance in the leaves, called chlorophyll, traps sunlight. Using the energy of sunlight, the leaf turns water and carbon dioxide into sugar. Oxygen is given out into the air. Animals and people breathe in this oxygen.

Where do the roots take up water from?
    (a) From the soil (b) From the leaves (c) From the air (d) From sunlight
  9. 9.My father’s bicycle is black and old,
Its bell is rusty, but its heart is gold.
It carried milk cans down the lane,
In blazing sun and pouring rain.
It took me to my school each day,
And never once complained, I say.
Now Father says it’s time to rest,
But I still think this bike’s the best.

    What colour is the bicycle?
    (a) Silver (b) Blue (c) Red (d) Black
  10. 10.On a stormy evening, Riya heard a soft whimper outside the gate. A tiny puppy was shivering in the rain. Her mother was worried that it might be ill. Still, they dried it with an old towel and gave it warm milk. The next day, they took it to the animal doctor. The doctor said the puppy was healthy, just hungry and cold. Riya named him Bijli because he arrived during a thunderstorm. Now Bijli follows her everywhere.

Why did Riya name the puppy Bijli?
    (a) It was bright white (b) It was very fast (c) It came in a storm (d) It barked loudly
  11. 11.Lightning is a giant spark of electricity in the sky. It happens when electric charges build up inside storm clouds. A flash of lightning heats the air around it very quickly. The hot air expands with a loud bang, which we hear as thunder. Light travels much faster than sound. That is why we see the flash before we hear the thunder. During a thunderstorm, stay indoors and away from tall trees. Standing under a tree is not safe, as lightning often strikes tall objects.

Why do we see the flash before we hear the thunder?
    (a) Thunder is quiet (b) Sound travels faster (c) Light travels faster (d) Clouds block sound
  12. 12.Some clouds are fluffy, soft and white,
They sail like ships in morning light.
Some clouds are dark and full of rain,
They rumble over hill and plain.
Some stretch like feathers, thin and high,
Brushed gently on the summer sky.
I lie on the grass and watch them go,
    A lion, a ship, a fat buffalo!

What are the dark clouds full of?
    (a) Snow (b) Smoke (c) Dust (d) Rain
