The trick (Nikhilam Navatashcaramam Dashatah): Write the complement of the divisor (8 → 2, 97 → 03, 88 → 12, 997 → 003, 897 → 103). Split off as many last digits as the base has zeros (1 for 8, 2 for 88, 3 for 997) — that is the remainder part. Bring down each column total, multiply it by the complement, and add the result under the next column(s). If the remainder is not smaller than the divisor, divide it again and add to the quotient.
