The grammar rule (One step back): Verb one step back: am / is → was, are → were, like → liked, will → would, can → could, have → had. Pronouns change to fit the reporter: I → he / she, my → his / her. “told” needs a person (told me that …); “said” does not (said that …). Reported questions use normal word order: asked me where I lived.
