Direct and indirect speech — English grammar for kids

Direct speech gives the exact words in quotation marks. Indirect (reported) speech tells what was said without quotation marks, so the pronouns change and, after “said”, the verb moves one step back into the past.

The grammar rule

One step back — “after “said”, the verb moves one step into the past and “I” becomes he or she”

  1. Verb one step back: am / is → was, are → were, like → liked, will → would, can → could, have → had.
  2. Pronouns change to fit the reporter: I → he / she, my → his / her.
  3. “told” needs a person (told me that …); “said” does not (said that …). Reported questions use normal word order: asked me where I lived.

Use it for: Writing reports and stories, and narration-change questions in Class 7–10 grammar.

Worked example: Aditya said, “I am busy.” → Aditya said that he ___ busy. → was

  1. “said” is past, so “am” moves one step back to “was”.
  2. “I” becomes “he”: Aditya said that he was busy.

Check: He said that he was busy — he matches Aditya, was matches said ✓
