Reading tip (Writer, reader, news): “Dear …” names the reader; the name at the end is the writer. In a diary, “I” is the person writing it. Look for the news: what happened, when, and how the writer felt.

   I am writing this on the train to Chennai. It is my first long train journey. I have the upper berth, and I climbed up the little ladder by myself. A tea seller walks past calling “chai, chai” every hour. Outside, I can see green paddy fields and coconut trees. We will reach Chennai tomorrow morning.
