It is a Coed Boarding School, which services the educational need of hundreds of students from VI through XII. The classes in The Lawrence School, Sanawar for every academic year starts from April.The school is situated at a height of 1750 meters (5600 feet). The school campus is heavily forested with pine, deodar and other conifer trees. The land acquired belonged to the Rana of Bhagat, a princely state. The school was founded by Sir Henry Lawrence and his wife Lady Honoria Lawrence. It is the first co-educational boarding school in the world. The school started with just 14 boys and girls. In 1853 strength of the school went up to 195 students. From 1847 till 1857 the financial burden of the school was borne by Sir Henry. Post his death in 1857, control of the school passed to the Crown. In 1920 the school was renamed to Lawrence Royal Military School as the boys of the school contributed to the military. Still students of Sanawar continue to make a major contribution to the defence of India. In 1947, Staff and children at Sanawar returned to UK and King George VI transferred the school from the Crown to the Ministry of Defence, Government of India.
