The trick (Ekadhikena Purvena): Ending in 1 (t1): t² | 2 × t | 1, carrying from the right. Ending in 4: square the next number (ends in 5), then take away the two numbers added together. Ending in 6: square the number before (ends in 5), then add the two numbers.
