Squares ending in 1, 4 and 6 — Vedic maths trick

Numbers ending in 1, 4 or 6 sit right next to easy ones. Use the pattern for 1, and the neighbour ending in 5 for 4 and 6.

The trick

Ekadhikena Purvena — “by one more than the one before”

  1. Ending in 1 (t1): t² | 2 × t | 1, carrying from the right.
  2. Ending in 4: square the next number (ends in 5), then take away the two numbers added together.
  3. Ending in 6: square the number before (ends in 5), then add the two numbers.

Use it for: Squares like 41², 64², 96², 131², 246².

Worked example: 34² = 1156

  1. 34 ends in 4 → its neighbour 35 ends in 5.
  2. 35² = 3 × 4 | 25 = 1225.
  3. 34² = 35² − (34 + 35) = 1225 − 69.
  4. Answer: 1156.

Check: 34 × 34 = 34 × 30 + 34 × 4 = 1020 + 136 = 1156 ✓
