Chapter 4: From the Diary of Anne Frank (with poem: Amanda!)
Overview
This chapter pairs a prose extract from The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank with the poem "Amanda!" by Robin Klein. Both pieces show young people who feel lonely or controlled and who find freedom through writing and imagination.
"Paper has more patience than people."
Before You Read — who was Anne Frank?
The chapter also explains four kinds of personal records: a journal (full daily record of a journey, period or event), a diary (a page for each day with thoughts and feelings), a log (official record of events with times and dates) and a memoir (a record of a person's own life, usually someone famous).
Prose: From the Diary of Anne Frank
Why Anne keeps a diary
A brief sketch of her life
Mr Keesing and the chatterbox essays
What this shows about Anne: she is honest and self-critical ("Maybe it's my fault that we don't confide in each other"), witty, confident, imaginative, and able to turn a punishment into a clever joke — "I'd make sure the joke was on him."
Poem: Amanda! — Robin Klein
The poem has seven stanzas. The odd stanzas (1, 3, 5, 7) are an adult — most likely her mother — nagging Amanda. The even stanzas (2, 4, 6), in parentheses, are Amanda's daydreams; she is not really listening.
Don't bite your nails, Amanda!

💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Anne Frank keeps a diary named 'Kitty' because she has no true friend to confide in, although she has loving family and about thirty friends.
- ✓Her life sketch: born 12 June 1929 in Frankfurt; family moved to Holland from 1933; grandmother died in January 1942.
- ✓Mr Keesing punishes her talking with three essays; her witty arguments and the verse essay with Sanne's help win him over.
- ✓In 'Amanda!' by Robin Klein, the bracketed stanzas are Amanda's daydreams (mermaid, orphan, Rapunzel) that show her longing for freedom.
- ✓Language work: compound words, phrasal verbs, idioms, dictionary use and contracted forms.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Start with the Before You Read matching task on journal, diary, log and memoir, using the four sample entries in the book.
- →Let students read the three essay titles aloud and predict how Anne will answer each before revealing her arguments.
- →Hold a short debate: 'Talking is a student's trait' — one side uses Anne's arguments, the other Mr Keesing's.
- →Read 'Amanda!' in pairs, one reading the nagging stanzas and one the bracketed dream stanzas, as the book suggests.
- →Ask students to keep a one-week diary using the book's hints on diary language (subjectless sentences, contractions).
- →Use the Samuel Pepys Great Fire of London (1666) listening passage to complete the summary exercise.
- →Link to history: discuss why Anne's diary became an important historical record of the Holocaust.
📋 Assessment Questions
- Why did Anne name her diary 'Kitty' and what did she want it to be?
- How did Anne justify being a chatterbox in her first essay?
- What was the third essay about and how did Mr Keesing react to it?
- Who speaks in the stanzas of 'Amanda!' in brackets, and what three things does Amanda imagine?
- Match any four compound words or phrasal verbs from the lesson with their meanings.
