Chapter 1: The Living World
Introduction
Chapter 1 opens Unit 1, Diversity in the Living World. It asks a simple question — what is living? — and then explains how biologists cope with the huge number of organisms on Earth. The number of species known and described ranges between 1.7–1.8 million, and new organisms are still being identified. To study them, scientists need rules to identify, name and classify every organism. The unit opener honours Ernst Mayr (1904–2004), called "the Darwin of the 20th century", who pioneered the currently accepted definition of a biological species.
Key Concepts
1.1 Diversity in the Living World
- Plants: International Code for Botanical Nomenclature (ICBN)
- Animals: International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN)
#### Universal rules of nomenclature
Classification is the process by which anything is grouped into convenient categories based on some easily observable characters.
1.2 Taxonomic Categories
Classification is a hierarchy of steps; each step is a rank or category. All categories together form the taxonomic hierarchy. Each category is a unit of classification called a taxon (pl. taxa).
The common categories, in ascending order: Species → Genus → Family → Order → Class → Phylum/Division → Kingdom.
As we go higher from species to kingdom, the number of common characteristics goes on decreasing. Lower the taxa, more the characteristics shared; higher the category, greater the difficulty of determining relationships.

💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Identification, nomenclature and classification are the basic processes of taxonomy; ICBN governs plant names and ICZN governs animal names.
- ✓Binomial nomenclature (Linnaeus) gives every organism a two-part name — genus + specific epithet — e.g., Mangifera indica.
- ✓Scientific names are Latinised, italicised (or separately underlined when handwritten); genus capitalised, epithet in lower case, author's name abbreviated at the end.
- ✓The taxonomic hierarchy in ascending order is Species, Genus, Family, Order, Class, Phylum/Division, Kingdom.
- ✓Moving up the hierarchy, the number of shared characters decreases and relationships become harder to determine.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Start with local names of a common plant (e.g., mango in different Indian languages) to show why a universal scientific name is needed.
- →Have students correctly write five scientific names on the board, checking capitalisation, italics/underlining and author abbreviation.
- →Build a human 'taxonomic ladder': seven students hold cards Species to Kingdom and arrange themselves in ascending order.
- →Use Table 1.1 as a fill-in-the-blanks worksheet for man, housefly, mango and wheat.
- →Give pictures of lion, tiger, leopard, cat and dog and ask students to group them into genus and family (Panthera, Felis; Felidae, Canidae).
- →Discuss 'Why do classification systems keep changing?' to connect with Chapter 2.
- →Introduce Ernst Mayr's biological species concept briefly to show taxonomy is an evolving science.
📋 Assessment Questions
- Can the student write a scientific name correctly following all rules of binomial nomenclature?
- Can the student arrange the taxonomic categories in correct ascending order?
- Can the student give examples of taxa at different levels for a plant and an animal?
- Can the student distinguish taxonomy from systematics and explain why organisms are classified?
