Summary: Water (Oceans)
Introduction
Water is essential for all life. The earth is lucky to be a water planet — water is rare in our solar system, and the book notes there is none on the sun or elsewhere in the solar system. Because of its abundant surface water, the earth is called the 'Blue Planet'. This chapter (Unit V) covers the hydrological cycle, the relief of the ocean floor, and the temperature and salinity of ocean waters.
Key Concepts
1. The Hydrological Cycle
- Water storage in oceans → evaporation, evapotranspiration, sublimation.
- Water in the atmosphere → condensation, precipitation.
- Water storage in ice and snow → snowmelt runoff to streams.
- Surface runoff → stream flow, freshwater storage, infiltration.
- Groundwater storage → groundwater discharge, springs.
2. Relief of the Ocean Floor
Four major divisions
Minor relief features
3. Temperature of Ocean Waters
Oceans heat and cool more slowly than land.
Factors affecting temperature distribution
Vertical distribution
Horizontal distribution
4. Salinity of Ocean Waters
Factors affecting salinity
Highest salinity water bodies (from the book): Lake Van, Turkey (330‰), Dead Sea (238‰), Great Salt Lake (220‰).

Vertical distribution

💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓The hydrological cycle continuously moves water between oceans, atmosphere, land, subsurface and living things.
- ✓The ocean floor has four major divisions: continental shelf, continental slope, deep sea plain and oceanic deeps.
- ✓Minor relief features include mid-oceanic ridges, seamounts, submarine canyons, guyots and atolls.
- ✓Ocean temperature falls with latitude and depth, with a thermocline between warm surface and cold deep water.
- ✓Salinity (in ‰) depends on evaporation, precipitation, river inflow, freezing, winds and currents.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Draw the hydrological cycle on the board and let students fill in each process from Table 12.1.
- →Build a clay or paper model of the ocean floor profile from shelf to trench.
- →Use an atlas to locate the Siberian shelf, Hudson Canyon, Emperor seamount and Iceland.
- →Dissolve different amounts of salt in water and compare how an egg floats to show salinity and density.
- →Plot the book's temperature-by-latitude figures (27°C, 22°C at 20°, 14°C at 40°, 0°C at poles) as a graph.
- →Compare salinity of the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea and ask students to explain the difference.
- →Discuss local water scarcity to link the hydrological cycle to the water crisis.
📋 Assessment Questions
- Explain the hydrological cycle and name its components.
- Describe the four major divisions of the ocean floor.
- What is a thermocline? Describe the three-layer temperature system of the oceans.
- What factors affect the salinity of ocean water?
- Why is the Red Sea more saline than the Bay of Bengal?
