Chapter 1: Writing and City Life (Section I: Early Societies)
Introduction
This chapter opens Section I: Early Societies of Themes in World History. The section introduction reminds us that humans first emerged in Africa and that archaeologists reconstruct early lives from bones and stone tools. Around 10,000 years ago came one of the most far-reaching changes: the shift from nomadic life to settled agriculture. Wheat, barley, peas and pulses were grown in West Asia; millet and rice in East and Southeast Asia. Sheep, goat, cattle, pig and donkey were domesticated, and about 5,000 years ago cattle and donkeys were harnessed to ploughs and carts. Settled life brought pottery, polished stone tools, the use of copper, long-distance exchange (including obsidian) and, finally, the first cities.
Theme 1 – Writing and City Life studies the earliest cities, those of Mesopotamia (present-day Iraq), and asks a central question: would the many activities of city life have been possible without writing?
Mesopotamia comes from the Greek words mesos (middle) and potamos (river) – the land between the Euphrates and the Tigris.
Key Themes and Events
Names, languages and the archaeology of Mesopotamia
Geography
The significance of urbanism
The development and uses of writing
Temples and kings in southern Mesopotamia
Life in the city
Mari – a trading town in a pastoral zone
Modern excavation and the legacy of writing
Timeline
Sources and Historians' Approaches
The chapter shows how the questions historians ask have changed – from trying to prove the Bible literally true to reconstructing ordinary lives. Sources include buildings, statues, graves, tools, seals and thousands of written tablets. Modern digs (Abu Salabikh) use careful scraping, sieving and microscopic study of floors rather than clearing huge areas as at Ur.

💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Explain how the shift to settled agriculture about 10,000 years ago prepared the way for villages, trade and the first cities.
- ✓Show why Mesopotamian city life depended on division of labour, organised trade, water transport and record-keeping, not fertility alone.
- ✓Trace the development of cuneiform writing from Uruk's first tablets (c. 3200 BCE) to its many uses by 2600 BCE.
- ✓Compare three kinds of Mesopotamian towns studied – the temple town of Uruk, the residential city of Ur and the trading town of Mari.
- ✓Identify Mesopotamia's legacy: mathematics (√2 ≈ 1.41421296), time reckoning, libraries like Assurbanipal's at Nineveh.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Begin with the chapter's own question: could city life exist without writing? Let students debate it before reading.
- →Give students wet clay or dough and a sharpened stick to press wedge-shaped marks, showing why each transaction needed a new tablet.
- →Use Map 2 to trace the Euphrates and Tigris and colour-code mountains, steppe, desert and the irrigated south.
- →Role-play the Enmerkar story: the messenger forgets messages until the king writes them down.
- →Have groups list every specialist needed to make the Warka Head, as Activity 2 suggests.
- →Compare the Mari palace plan with a modern government building – where is the office, store, kitchen?
- →Work out the Babylonian √2 value on a calculator to show the accuracy of Mesopotamian mathematics.
- →Build a class wall-timeline from 7000 BCE to 331 BCE using the chapter's dates.
📋 Assessment Questions
- Can the student explain why urbanisation needed more than productive agriculture?
- Can the student describe how cuneiform was written and why literacy was limited?
- Can the student distinguish the roles of temple, king and scribe in early cities?
- Can the student use evidence from Ur, Mari and Abu Salabikh to describe daily life?
- Can the student explain what Assurbanipal and Nabonidus show about Mesopotamian respect for the past?
