Chapter 3: Changing Traditions – Section III Introduction and Timeline III (c. 1300–1700)
Introduction
This short chapter is the introduction to Section III: Changing Traditions and Timeline III (c. 1300 to 1700). It links the empires of Section II with the two themes that follow – The Three Orders and Changing Cultural Traditions – and explains how traditions in western Europe changed slowly between the ninth and seventeenth centuries.
It begins by noting that, by the ninth century, large parts of Asia had seen great empires, some nomadic and some city-based. The Macedonian, Roman and Arab empires (and the Mongol empire) differed from earlier ones (Egyptian, Assyrian, Chinese, Mauryan) because they were continental or transcontinental. Empires arrived suddenly, but were the result of long changes at their core.
Key Themes
Slow change in western Europe
Between the ninth and seventeenth centuries, much that we connect with modern times evolved slowly in western Europe:
The consequences of these changes were felt strongly outside Europe too.
From the Roman Empire to feudalism
Commerce, towns and the Crusades
The Renaissance and new attitudes
Voyages and encounters
Timeline III (c. 1300–1700) – selected entries
The timeline stresses contacts between continents through trade, sharing of ideas and goods – but also constant warfare, displacement and enslavement.
Sources and Historians' Approaches
The introduction encourages students to see change over the long term and from different points of view – European and non-European. The Australia/Pacific column has few dates because peoples there used other ways of recording, such as paintings.

- →Show images of the Palace of the Popes at Avignon and the Doge's Palace in Venice from the chapter to discuss Church and commerce.
- →Map the voyages: Cape of Good Hope route, Columbus's western route, Vasco da Gama to Calicut.
- →Discuss encounters from both sides using Hasan al-Wazzan, Will Adams and Dona Marina.
- →Use the Australia/Pacific column to discuss how different peoples record history (paintings vs written dates).
- →Link forward: tell students the next two chapters (The Three Orders; Changing Cultural Traditions) expand this introduction.
