Chapter 2: Principles of Management
Introduction
The chapter opens with the guiding principles of Toyota Motor Corporation — principles such as honouring the law, respecting culture, providing clean and safe products, creating technology, and working with partners — to show that successful companies are driven by principles. The evolution of management thought runs from early perspectives through the classical theory (Taylor's scientific management, Fayol's administrative theory, Weber's bureaucracy) to modern management. The two pioneers studied here are F.W. Taylor and Henri Fayol.
Key Concepts
Concept of management principles
A management principle is a broad and general guideline for managerial decision-making and behaviour.
Principles differ from techniques (procedures/methods) and from values (general rules of behaviour in society). Principles are not rigid like the principles of pure science; they deal with human behaviour.
Nature of principles of management
Significance of principles of management
The book's example of Shri Mahila Griha Udyog Lijjat Papad shows principles in action — the concepts of business, family and devotion.
Taylor's Scientific Management
F.W. Taylor (1856–1915), an American mechanical engineer, is called the father of scientific management. He worked at Midvale Steel Company and Bethlehem Steel.
Scientific management means knowing exactly what you want men to do and seeing that they do it in the best and cheapest way.

Fayol's 14 Principles of Management
Henri Fayol (1841–1925), a French mining engineer, is the father of general (administrative) management. He was the first to identify management functions.

- ✓Functional foremanship conflicts with Fayol's unity of command.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Role-play functional foremanship: one student as a worker receives instructions from eight classmates acting as specialists.
- →Give short case snippets and ask students to name the Fayol principle followed or violated.
- →Draw the scalar chain (A to Q) on the board and show where the gang plank connects F and P.
- →Compare Taylor and Fayol in a structured discussion: background, focus, applicability, key contribution.
- →Time a simple task (folding paper) twice to demonstrate time and motion study.
- →Discuss Lijjat Papad and ask which principles explain its success.
