Chapter 3: Business Environment
Introduction
The chapter opens with "How a Rickshaw Puller became an entrepreneur". Dharamveer Kamboj, a Delhi rickshaw puller, returned to his village in Yamunanagar, Haryana after an accident. On visits near Jaipur, Ajmer and Pushkar he saw women's self-help groups painfully grating gooseberries by hand to make laddoos; the available machines were too costly. Noticing that cutting, grating, juicing and pulverising use similar techniques, he built an affordable multipurpose food-processing machine. The case shows how an alert entrepreneur spots opportunities in the environment and makes life easier for others.
Key Concepts
Meaning of business environment

Examples: increase in taxes by government, technological improvements making products obsolete, political uncertainty creating fear among investors.

Importance of business environment
Dimensions of business environment
Economic environment in India
Since independence the government pursued planned development; many industries were reserved for the public sector. In July 1991 the Government announced the New Industrial Policy:
Liberalisation — freeing Indian industry from unnecessary controls: abolishing licensing, freedom in scale and prices, removal of restrictions on movement of goods, reduction in tax rates, simplified procedures for imports and exports, easier to attract foreign capital.
Privatisation — giving a greater role to the private sector and reducing the public sector (disinvestment).
Globalisation — integrating the economy with the world economy: free flow of goods, capital, information and people across borders.
Demonetisation
On November 8, 2016 the Government demonetised the two largest notes, ₹500 and ₹1,000, with immediate effect; this made eighty-six per cent of the money in circulation invalid. New ₹500 and ₹2,000 notes were introduced.
Features: viewed as a tax administration measure to curb black money; an indication of the government's shift in tolerance of tax evasion; led to tax administration channelling savings into the formal financial system; encouraged a digital, less-cash economy (use of Point-of-Sale machines and digital payments).
Impact (book's table): private wealth declined; digitisation increased; real-estate prices declined; income-tax collection rose because of increased disclosure.
