Chapter 5: Secondary Activities
Introduction
Secondary activities add value to natural resources by turning raw materials into valuable products. Cotton in the boll has limited use, but as yarn it can make clothes. Iron ore cannot be used straight from the mine, but as steel it makes machines and tools. So secondary activities cover manufacturing, processing and construction (infrastructure) industries.
Key Concepts
1. Manufacturing
Manufacturing ranges from handicrafts and moulding iron and steel to stamping out plastic toys and assembling computer parts or space vehicles. The common features are:
Manufacturing literally means "to make by hand", but it now includes goods "made by machines". An industry is a geographically located manufacturing unit that keeps books of accounts under a management system. Because "industry" is also used for entertainment and tourism, the longer phrase "manufacturing industry" is used for clarity.
2. Characteristics of Modern Large-Scale Manufacturing
3. Location Factors
Industries locate where production costs are minimum.
Footloose industries can be located in a wide variety of places.
4. Classification of Industries (Fig. 5.1)
By size, which depends on capital, workers and volume of production:
By inputs:
Agri-business is commercial farming on an industrial scale, financed by business interests outside agriculture. Such farms are described as "agro-factories".
By output:
By ownership:
5. High-Technology Industry
High-tech industry applies intensive R and D to products of an advanced scientific character.
The world's most important industries are iron and steel, textiles, automobiles, petrochemicals and electronics.

💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Explain how secondary activities add value to raw materials, and define manufacturing and manufacturing industry.
- ✓List the characteristics of modern large-scale manufacturing.
- ✓Analyse the location factors, with market access as the most important, and describe footloose industries.
- ✓Classify industries by size, inputs, output and ownership with textbook examples.
- ✓Describe high-tech industries and technopolies such as Silicon Valley and Silicon Forest.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Start with the cotton-to-yarn and ore-to-steel examples, and have students trace value addition for a product in the classroom.
- →Draw Fig. 5.1 as a mind map on the board with four branches: size, inputs, output and ownership.
- →Give a location-factor case game: students decide where to place an aluminium plant, a sugar mill and a software firm, and justify it.
- →Contrast the 2.5 sq km corn belt example with a factory estate to show the intensity of manufacturing.
- →Discuss footloose industries by asking why a mobile-accessory unit can be set up almost anywhere with road access.
- →Show images of Silicon Valley campuses versus steel plants to illustrate the high-tech landscape.
- →Practise the Africa 150-word answer as a group, linking each location factor to the continent.
