Chapter 7: Transport and Communication
Introduction
Natural resources, economic activities and markets are rarely found in one place. Transport, communication and trade link producing centres with consuming centres. Transport carries persons and goods over land, water and air, and pipelines carry petroleum, natural gas and liquefied ores. A transport network is several places (nodes) joined by a series of routes (links) to form a pattern. In a well-managed system the modes complement each other:
Key Concepts
1. Land Transport
Roads are the most economical mode for short distances and give door-to-door service.
Highways are metalled roads about 80 m wide, with separate lanes and flyovers.
Railways carry bulky goods and passengers over long distances.
Trans-continental railways
2. Water Transport
Water transport needs no route construction, only ports at the two ends. It is cheaper because water's friction is far less than land's.
Sea routes
Shipping canals
Inland waterways depend on channel width and depth, continuity of flow, and technology.
3. Air Transport
4. Pipelines
5. Communications

💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Explain the role of transport and communication, and how modes complement each other.
- ✓Describe road, highway and railway networks, including the major trans-continental railways.
- ✓Identify the major sea routes, the Suez and Panama canals, and the important inland waterways.
- ✓Explain the features of air transport and pipelines, with textbook examples.
- ✓Trace developments in communication, from the telegraph to optic fibre, satellites and cyberspace.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Hand out outline maps and have students trace each trans-continental railway with its terminal cities as it is taught.
- →Use a 'mode selection' game: give cargo such as flowers, iron ore, crude oil and a parcel to the next town, and ask for the best mode.
- →Compare Suez and Panama with a quick two-column comparison (year, length, locks, oceans joined).
- →Show a globe to demonstrate why the Great Circle shortens the Vancouver–Yokohama route.
- →Build an internet-growth timeline (1995, 2000, 2010, 2023) and discuss the global village.
- →Link India's satellite milestones (Aryabhatt 1975 onward) to daily uses such as weather forecasts.
- →Revise all five textbook MCQs with 'why the others are wrong' explanations.
📋 Assessment Questions
- Can the student match each trans-continental railway to its terminal cities and length?
- Can the student name the six major sea routes and identify the Big Trunk Route?
- Can the student compare Suez and Panama on at least three features?
- Can the student give examples of pipelines and explain why pipelines are used?
- Can the student explain how satellites made communication cost invariant with distance?
