Chapter 9: My Name

Introduction

My Name is Chapter 2 of Unit 4, Life Around Us, in Mridang. It is a funny chain story about a little fly who forgot his name. He asks one creature after another — an ant, a tree, a cow, the grass and a leaf — until something surprising helps him remember. The story teaches the importance of names and our identity.

What's in this Chapter

The story:

Once there was a little fly. One day he could not remember his name! He tried and tried, but it was of no use.

He asked an ant. The ant said, "I don't know. You may ask the tree I climb."

The tree said, "I don't know. You may ask the cow sleeping in my shade."

The cow said, "I don't know. You may ask the grass I eat."

The grass said, "I don't know. You may ask the leaves fallen on me."

The fly asked a leaf. The leaf was about to answer when the wind blew and the leaf began to fly.

Seeing this, the fly remembered: "My name is Fly! My name is Fly!" he said happily.

Sight words: his, do you, it, my, one, when, about.

New words: little, ant, shade, dear, grass, wind, remembered.

Key Ideas

Each creature sends the fly on to the next — ant → tree → cow → grass → leaf. This is a chain story.

The word fly has two meanings: the insect (a fly) and the action (to fly). The leaf flying reminded the fly of his name.

Our name is part of who we are. The book asks children to find out the meaning of their own name.

The fly politely says "Dear tree", "Dear cow" — good manners when asking for help.

Activities from the Book

Let us speak: How did the fly find his name? If you forget your name, whom would you ask?

Let us listen: sit quietly under a tree with eyes closed and listen — birds, leaves, insects, breeze, vehicles. Then make sounds: caw like a crow, chirp like a sparrow, roar like a lion, meow like a cat, buzz like a bee, quack like a duck.

Let us write: Who forgot his name? Whom did the fly ask? Complete sentences using the help box (tree, cow, grass, leaf, fly).

Let us do: a rebus story — say "give me" wherever you see the leaf picture: "A cat said to a cow, 'Please give me some milk.'…" The cow finally gives milk because the cat will say "Thank you".

Project work: find out the meaning of your name and tell the class.

Blends bl and pl: blue, black, blanket; plum, plate, plant — "Rohit has a blue blanket."

little – small (छोटा)

fly – a small insect; also, to move in the air (मक्खी / उड़ना)

remember – to bring back to mind (याद करना)

forgotten – not remembered (भूल गया)

ant – a tiny insect (चींटी)

shade – a cool dark place under a tree (छाया)

dear – a kind word used when talking to someone (प्रिय)

grass – thin green plants on the ground (घास)

leaf – the flat green part of a plant (पत्ता)

Tips for Parents & Teachers

Tell the story as a chain with finger puppets or picture cards; children love repeating "I don't know. You may ask…".

Help your child find the meaning of their name and why it was chosen.

Play a sound game outside: close your eyes and name every sound you hear.

Act out the rebus story, shouting "give me!" at each leaf picture.

Practise bl/pl words with real things: a blue cloth, a plate, a plant.

Common Mistakes

Thinking the ant knew the name — nobody knew; the fly remembered it himself.

Mixing up the order: it is ant → tree → cow → grass → leaf.

Missing the joke: the fly remembered because the leaf began to fly.

Saying the cow was eating under the tree — the cow was sleeping in the tree's shade.
