Chapter 11: Data Handling

Introduction

Data Handling teaches children to collect information, record it in a table, show it with pictures (faces) and answer questions such as most liked and least liked. The last part of the chapter is a set of fun puzzles that use shapes, numbers and logic.

What's in this Chapter

  • Favourite Colours: from a picture, children count how many like red, green, blue and yellow, fill a table, and find the most and least liked colour.
  • Picnic Day: children at a fruit party eat their favourite fruits (apple, banana, guava, orange, kiwi). Children fill a table and compare using more than, less than, equal to.
  • Mode of coming to school: on foot, autorickshaw, bus, bike and bicycle. The number of students is shown by drawing a face for each student (one face = 1 student). Children read which mode is used the most and the least.
  • Games we Play: gilli-danda, kabaddi, pithu, football and cricket — children fill a table, draw faces and find the most and least liked game.
  • Class survey: ask friends about their favourite vegetable and the number of people in their family, and fill a table.
  • Project Work: visit nearby families and record how many live with both grandparents, only a grandmother, only a grandfather or no grandparents.
  • Puzzles: join matching shapes without crossing lines; find number names from eleven to twenty in a word grid; find the right shadow; count ways for an ant and a cat to get home; make two squares by removing two matchsticks; "I am in a bicycle, and in a car and a bus … They can't move if I am flat. What is my shape?" (a circle — the wheel); help a hungry giraffe reach the tree; count rectangles ("a square is also a type of rectangle"); arrange 1 to 7 so three arms have the same total; a shepherd's garden puzzle.
  • Maths trick: think of a number, double it, add eight, take away half, take away the number you started with — the answer is always 4.
  • Word puzzles: a 6 metre cloth cut 1 metre at a time needs 5 cuts; "I think of a number and double it; my answer is 18" — the number is 9.
  • Which balls make 30? Using three balls numbered 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15 — a thinking puzzle, because adding three odd numbers always gives an odd number, so 30 cannot be made this way. Encourage children to try and discover why.
  • Key Ideas

  • Data is information we collect, like favourite colours or games.
  • A table helps us record data neatly.
  • A pictograph uses pictures (one face = one child) to show data.
  • We can compare data using most, least, more than, less than and equal to.
  • Puzzles build logical thinking and patience.
  • Activities from the Book

  • Class survey on favourite vegetables.
  • Family-size survey.
  • Grandparents survey (project work).
  • Matchstick and number puzzles.
  • Words to Learn

  • Data (आँकड़े)
  • Table (तालिका)
  • Most (सबसे अधिक), Least (सबसे कम)
  • Favourite (पसंदीदा)
  • Survey (सर्वे / जानकारी इकट्ठा करना)
  • Equal to (बराबर)
  • Puzzle (पहेली)
  • Mode (साधन — जैसे बस, साइकिल)
  • Tips for Parents & Teachers

  • Before visiting families, discuss in class which questions to ask, as the book suggests.
  • Make a family survey at home: favourite fruit of each family member.
  • Use tally marks or stickers to record answers, then count.
  • Try the "answer is always 4" trick with the child and let them try it on friends.
  • Common Mistakes

  • Counting a child twice or missing someone when filling a table.
  • Drawing faces of different sizes so the chart looks wrong — all pictures should be the same size.
  • Mixing up "most liked" with "least liked".
  • 💡 Key Learning Points

    • ✓Collect simple data by counting and asking questions.
    • ✓Record data in a table and show it with pictures (one face = one student).
    • ✓Read tables and pictographs to find most, least, more than, less than and equal to.
    • ✓Carry out small surveys in class and in the neighbourhood.
    • ✓Solve logic, shape and number puzzles.

    👨‍🏫 Teaching Tips

    • →Start with a quick class poll on favourite colours and fill the table together.
    • →Show how one face stands for one student and keep all faces the same size.
    • →Let children collect data on vegetables and family size themselves.
    • →Discuss the questions to ask before the grandparents survey.
    • →Use matchsticks, beads and grids so children can try the puzzles with their hands.
    • →Play the 'answer is always 4' maths trick and ask children why it works.
    • →Let children make their own puzzles for classmates.

    📋 Assessment Questions

    3. Can the child compare two items using more than, less than or equal to?
    4. Can the child carry out a small survey and record the answers?
