Chapter 8: Grouping and Sharing

Introduction

Grouping and Sharing introduces two big ideas: multiplication (adding equal groups) and division (sharing equally or making equal groups). It starts on a road: a child counts the wheels of bicycles and autorickshaws by adding, but misses the cars. Ramya shows a faster way — "There were 7 cars and each car had 4 wheels, so the total number of wheels is 7 times 4, means 28."

What's in this Chapter

  • Wheels on the road: 4 bicycles × 2 wheels: 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 8, so 4 × 2 = 8 ("4 groups of 2 give 8"). 2 autorickshaws × 3 wheels: 2 × 3 = 6. 7 cars × 4 wheels = 28. The sign × is read as "times".
  • Let us Do: wings of butterflies (3 × 2 = 6), legs of octopuses (2 × 8 = 16), soldiers in lines (4 × 10 = 40).
  • Complete the Table and Match the Following: 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 4 times 3 = 4 × 3 = 12; 9 + 9 + 9 = 3 × 9 = 27; 7 fives are 35; 4 groups of 10 = 40.
  • Tables of 2, 3, 5 and 10: "2 ones are 2, 2 twos are 4 …".
  • How Many? 4 bouquets of 3 flowers and 3 bouquets of 4 flowers both use 12 flowers — 4 × 3 = 3 × 4. The same is tested with 4 × 5 and 5 × 4, 6 × 4 and 4 × 6.
  • Word problems: 8 packets of 5 bindis (40), 4 buttons on each of 7 shirts (28), 6 pencils at ₹4 each (₹24), 5 people in each of 8 cars (40).
  • Making tables: Rudra makes the table of 4 by adding the table of 2 to itself; the table of 6 from two tables of 3; the table of 7 from the tables of 3 and 4; the table of 8 from the tables of 2 and 6.
  • Project Work: arrange 24 objects in different arrays (like 3 groups of 8, 4 groups of 6) and write multiplication facts.
  • Let us Share: a brother and sister share gulab jamuns one by one — "1 for you, 1 for me" — until each has 4. Ritu puts 12 bindis equally on 2 ice-cream cones (6 each); Pooja divides laddoos equally in 3 plates.
  • How Many Groups? Garima has 20 star beads and uses 5 for each bracelet: she can make 4 bracelets.
  • Let us Make: 21 beads, 7 on each string → 3 strings; 54 flowers, 9 in each bracelet → 6; 25 roses, 5 in a vase → 5 vases; 27 candles in 3 boxes → 9 each; 30 buttons, 6 on a shirt → 5 shirts; 24 bananas among 3 monkeys → 8 each.
  • Key Ideas

  • Multiplication is repeated addition of equal groups.
  • "4 × 3" means 4 groups of 3.
  • Changing the order does not change the answer: 4 × 3 = 3 × 4.
  • Division means sharing equally or making equal groups.
  • New tables can be made by adding known tables (3 + 4 gives 7).
  • Activities from the Book

  • Counting wheels, wings and legs.
  • Arranging 24 objects in arrays.
  • Sharing gulab jamuns, bindis and laddoos equally.
  • Making bracelets with beads.
  • Words to Learn

  • Group (समूह)
  • Times (गुना) and × (गुणा का चिह्न)
  • Equal (बराबर)
  • Share (बाँटना)
  • Table (पहाड़ा)
  • Each (प्रत्येक)
  • Array (पंक्तियों में व्यवस्था)
  • Bouquet (गुलदस्ता)
  • Tips for Parents & Teachers

  • Count shoes in pairs, wheels on vehicles and legs of animals as equal groups.
  • Let children share snacks equally among family members.
  • Use buttons or bottle caps to show 4 × 6 and 6 × 4 as rows and columns.
  • Discuss traffic rules when talking about vehicles, as the book suggests.
  • Common Mistakes

  • Adding the two numbers instead of multiplying (writing 4 × 2 = 6).
  • Sharing unequally — giving one person extra.
  • Thinking 3 × 4 and 4 × 3 give different totals.
  • 💡 Key Learning Points

    • ✓Understand multiplication as repeated addition of equal groups.
    • ✓Read and write multiplication sentences using ×, e.g. 4 × 2 = 8.
    • ✓Build the tables of 2, 3, 5 and 10 and make new tables by adding known ones.
    • ✓Know that 4 × 3 = 3 × 4 (order does not change the product).
    • ✓Share objects equally and find how many equal groups can be made.

    👨‍🏫 Teaching Tips

    • →Discuss the importance of traffic rules while counting wheels of vehicles.
    • →Use real objects (bangles, buttons, pebbles) to make equal groups.
    • →Ask children to write each situation three ways: repeated addition, 'times' and ×.
    • →Let children test 4 × 3 = 3 × 4 with bouquets or rows of objects.
    • →Do the 24-object array project and list all the facts found.
    • →Act out sharing gulab jamuns one by one to show fair sharing.
    • →Let children make bead bracelets to find how many groups of 5 are in 20.

    📋 Assessment Questions

    1. Can the child write 5 + 5 + 5 as 3 × 5 = 15?
    2. Can the child say the tables of 2, 5 and 10?
    3. Can the child solve 'Rita bought 6 pencils at ₹4 each'?
    4. Can the child share 24 bananas equally among 3 monkeys?
    5. Can the child explain why 4 × 6 and 6 × 4 give the same answer?
