Chapter 17: Let's Create
Introduction
Chapter 17, Let's Create, is Act 3 of the Theatre unit. Children now know the basics of theatre (creativity, imagination and communication), so "we are ready to start acting!" Vidushaka adds another magical tool: SPEECH. "Though it seems easy… it may not be." Children create scenes in pairs, then act stories in groups.
What's in this Chapter
Scene 5 – Create a Scene
- Work in teams of two. The teacher gives each of you a character and a situation, and you have a conversation until the teacher says stop.
- You can use real or suggestive props.
- Basic: police and thief, patient and doctor, convincing your mother to give you money to buy chocolate, planning a birthday surprise for a friend.
- Advanced: situations based on concepts such as helping, sharing, honesty and respect.
- You will learn: coordination, use of props, confidence, creating a visual situation and teamwork.
- Vidushaka's lesson: did speech make it easier, or did you forget body language? Coordinating body language, expressions and speech is the best way to act, and practice makes it easier.
- Everyday practice: notice your own actions and expressions when you talk, and observe others.
Scene 6 – Stories in Action
- The class is divided into groups of 5 or 6. Each group gets a simple story to prepare, practise and perform.
- Basic: familiar stories from Tenali Rama, the Panchatantra or other textbooks, e.g. The clever crow.
- Advanced: themes from epics, legends and literature, e.g. Ekalavya, the cat's judgement, Arjuna's focus during training, Shravana Kumara, or Ganesha's devotion to Shiva and Parvati.
- Working in a team is different from working alone. Everyone gets an equal chance, and everyone's ideas and opinions are considered. This is teamwork.
- Vidushaka's tip: "Always think of what you are contributing to the team rather than finding faults and blaming others."
