Chapter 6: Paper Boats

Introduction

Paper Boats is a story about Meena, who loves floating paper boats, and a naughty boy who spoils her fun. Instead of fighting, Meena teaches him to make his own boats and they both enjoy playing. It ends Unit 2: Toys and Games.

What's in this Chapter

The story

  • Meena walks to the stream near the bamboo bridge and puts a paper boat in the water. It sails swiftly. She is delighted and puts in several more.
  • She sees a naughty boy pushing her boats into the water (overturning them). She stares angrily and shouts, "Stop!" but he doesn't stop.
  • "Why are you overturning the paper boats?" she asks. "Because it is fun," he replies.
  • Meena says, "It may be fun for you, but those are my paper boats." The boy thinks and says, "I will not do it again, but I also want to play. Can you help me?"
  • He doesn't know how to fold paper. Meena says, "That's easy, I will help you." She takes out coloured paper of different sizes and shows him how to fold and re-fold.
  • Soon both put their boats in the stream and enjoy watching them sail.
  • New words: delighted, several, overturning, stream, watched.

    Key Ideas

  • Speaking up politely but firmly can stop unkind behaviour.
  • Helping someone learn a skill turns a quarrel into friendship.
  • 'He' and 'she' are used instead of names: "Meena walked … She bent a little …"; "The boy … He gave it to Meena."
  • Position words (prepositions) tell where things are: on, under, in — the bat is under the bed, the books are in the shelves.
  • Activities from the Book

  • Answer: What was Meena playing with? (paper boats) Why was she angry? (the boy was overturning her boats) How did she help? (she showed him how to fold paper boats).
  • True/False: The boy thought it was fun to overturn paper boats (T); Meena ran home to complain (F); the boy did not know how to make paper boats (T); Meena had only white paper (F — she had coloured paper).
  • Tell the picture story "Manish saves the ant".
  • Fill in he/she: "Rani likes playing outside. She likes flying kites." "Sahil has a top. He plays with it every day."
  • Draw a rangoli by following steps (the book links this to Mridang, Class 2).
  • Write about a picture of a park with a see-saw, swings and slide.
  • Crossword on toys and games: top, bat, marble, football, ball, swing.
  • Ask elders what games they played as children and teach one to friends.
  • A Self Assessment checklist for Units 1–2 (reciting, reading, writing, telling stories, doing exercises).
  • Words to Learn

  • stream – a small river (नाला / छोटी नदी)
  • bamboo bridge – a bridge made of bamboo (बाँस का पुल)
  • sailed – moved on water (तैरी / चली)
  • swiftly – quickly (तेज़ी से)
  • delighted – very happy (बहुत खुश)

  • Tips for Parents & Teachers

  • Discuss: What would you do if someone spoiled your game? How did Meena solve it?
  • Use toys and a box to practise on/in/under.
  • Replace names with he/she in short sentences about classmates.
  • Help children fill the self-assessment sheet with care, as the teacher note says.
  • Common Mistakes

  • Thinking Meena complained at home — she solved the problem herself.
  • Using 'he' for a girl or 'she' for a boy.
  • Mixing 'in' and 'on' (a bag is on the chair; a ball is in or under the box).
  • Saying Meena had only white paper — she had coloured paper of different sizes.
