Chapter 5: The Frog (Unit 3: Water)
About the Chapter
The Frog is a lively poem that opens Unit 3: Water in Santoor, Grade 5. The frog itself is the speaker ("I sit in ponds…"). It tells us where it lives, how it grew up, how it eats, hides, sings and jumps. The poem has nine rhyming couplets (pairs of lines).
The Poem in Brief
Where the frog lives
I sit in ponds and in the rain, / Or hop about in a muddy drain.
I live on land and water too, / In places damp with drops of dew.
A frog lives both on land and in water (it is an amphibian) and likes damp places.
Growing up
As a tadpole, I swim with cheer, / A tiny fish-like thing, so clear!
A young frog is a tadpole, a tiny fish-like creature that swims.
Eating
I flick my tongue to catch my food, / It works so fast—now that's quite good!
The frog catches insects by flicking its tongue very fast.
Hiding and danger
My colours match the plants and trees, / I hide so well in grass and leaves!
But snakes are near, I must beware, / Or else they'll catch me unaware!
Its colours help it hide (camouflage). It must watch out for snakes.
Singing, jumping, swimming
I croak my songs, they sound so loud, / Yet in my pond, I feel so proud.
With webbed feet, I swim with ease, / And leap so high in joyful breeze!
The frog croaks loudly, hops and jumps high, and swims easily with its webbed feet.

- →Show a frog life-cycle chart (egg → tadpole → froglet → frog) to explain the tadpole lines
- →Compare frog and toad pictures side by side to teach smooth/moist versus dry/bumpy skin
- →Run a tongue-twister challenge: slow, then faster, counting correct repetitions
- →Put jumbled-sentence word cards on the board for teams to rearrange
- →Read the 'My Frog's World' drawing instructions aloud with extra details (lily pads, webbed feet)
- →Write a class reply to Hopper together as a model before students write their own
