Chapter 21: Integration of All Art Forms (Integration of Art Forms)

Introduction

You have reached the final part of Kriti. You have learnt about all four art forms — visual arts, music, dance and theatre. Now it's time to bring them together in a single activity.

Key Ideas

A story that weaves all the art forms

Two friends playing at the edge of a forest find a mystery seal with a secret code. Trying to crack it, they get lost in the jungle. They see indigenous people dancing before their God and are caught and taken to the village. Scared, they plan to escape — until they notice that every hut has the same design as the seal. They show the seal; the villagers are thrilled to see their sacred seal, make friends with them, show them around, and tell them they worship the Earth as their God.

Decoding the story:

  • Seal — you made one as a Visual Arts activity.
  • Local and regional songs and dance — from your Music and Dance periods.
  • Dialogues and expressions of joy, fear and surprise — from Theatre, and now you can create them.
  • The Pancha Tattva

Do you know? The Pancha (five) Tattva (elements), or Pancha Bhuta, are the five basic elements: earth, water, fire, air and space.

The suggested theme for your projects is "Earth and Water" from the Pancha Tattva.

    Elements of each art form

  • Theatre: emotions, actions, words
  • Music: sounds, rhythms, emotions, words
  • Visual art: lines, shapes, colours, textures
  • Dance: rhythms, movement, expressions
  • Activities

    Individual activity

Identify issues related to earth and water that can be shown through art. Example: for soil pollution, make a photography campaign or posters (visual art), write a song with motivational lyrics in an energetic tune (music), practise dance steps to it (dance), and make a short skit, drama or nukkad natak (street play) that brings them all together (theatre). Fill in how each art form's elements connect to earth and water.

    Group activity (a game)

Think about the soil quality or drinking water in your locality, a pond or river and its ecosystem, hills or a waterfall — or imagine a day without water. Art can bring positive social change.

  • Make five sets of chits — one each for theatre, music, visual art, dance and values.
  • Divide the class into two or three groups of about 10–12. Each group chooses earth (prithvi) or water (jala).
  • A representative picks one chit from each set; the values chit becomes the theme that ties everything together.
  • The group develops and presents an integrated production.
  • Chit ideas from the book:

  • Theatre: mask making, puppet show, design costume and make-up, write a script with characters and a conversation
  • Music: songwriting and composing, create sound with materials around you, use any instrument to create emotion related to the element, find a song by a famous musician you have learnt about
  • Visual art: create artwork with the element itself (mud and clay or water colours), use natural colours, use an element-related surface or material, upcycle discarded materials like bottles or pipes
  • Dance: use only footwork and expression, find a folk dance related to earth and water, use only hand gestures, compose a dance to a song or music
  • Values: sustainability, cultural sensitivity, selfless work, Swachhta
  • Key Terms

  • Integration — bringing together (एकीकरण)
  • Pancha Tattva / Pancha Bhuta — the five elements (पंच तत्व / पंचभूत)
  • Prithvi — earth (पृथ्वी)
  • Jala — water (जल)
  • Nukkad natak — street play (नुक्कड़ नाटक)
  • Upcycle — reuse discarded things creatively (पुनः उपयोग)
  • Sustainability — using resources without harming the future (स्थिरता / संधारणीयता)
  • Swachhta — cleanliness (स्वच्छता)
  • Ecosystem — living things and their environment (पारिस्थितिकी तंत्र)
  • Campaign — organised effort to spread a message (अभियान)
  • Connect to Your Life

Pick a real earth or water problem near your home and design a poster, a song and a short skit about it.

    Common Mistakes

  • Using only one art form instead of combining all four.
  • Forgetting the values chit that ties the production together.
  • Choosing a theme unrelated to earth or water.
  • Let's Reflect

  • How did the forest story use visual art, music, dance and theatre?
  • Name the five elements of the Pancha Tattva.
  • 💡 Key Learning Points

    • ✓All four art forms — visual arts, music, dance and theatre — can be woven into one story or production
    • ✓The Pancha Tattva (Pancha Bhuta) are earth, water, fire, air and space
    • ✓The suggested integration theme is 'Earth and Water' (prithvi and jala)
    • ✓Each art form has its own elements: lines, shapes, colours and textures; sounds and rhythms; movement and expressions; emotions, actions and words
    • ✓Art can create positive social change, guided by values like sustainability, cultural sensitivity, selfless work and Swachhta

    👨‍🏫 Teaching Tips

    • →Read the mystery-seal story aloud and ask students to spot each art form in it
    • →Prepare the five sets of chits in advance using the book's lists
    • →Form groups of 10–12 and let each choose earth or water
    • →Encourage a nukkad natak format for the final presentation
    • →Collect waste bottles and pipes for upcycling art
    • →Connect to local issues: soil quality, drinking water, a nearby pond or river

    📋 Assessment Questions

    1. Can the student identify how each art form appears in the forest story?
    2. Can the student name the five elements of the Pancha Tattva?
    3. Does the group's production include theatre, music, visual art and dance with a value theme?
    4. Does the project address a real earth or water issue?
