Unit 1: Fables and Folk Tales — A Bottle of Dew, The Raven and the Fox, Rama to the Rescue
Unit Overview
Unit 1 of Poorvi is about Fables and Folk Tales: short stories and poems, handed down over generations, that teach a life lesson. The unit has three pieces:
All three teach the same big idea: wisdom and effort solve problems, not magic, pride or panic.
A Bottle of Dew (Sudha Murty)
Type: Folk tale (prose)
What happens:
"It was your hard work that created this wealth, not magic."
Message: Hard work is the real "magic". A wise teacher sometimes uses a clever trick because the learner would not have listened otherwise.
The Raven and the Fox (Jean de La Fontaine)
Type: Fable in verse, 4 stanzas, rhyming couplets
What happens:
"Sir Raven, you are a handsome bird. / Such feathers! If you would only sing, / The birds of these woods would call you King."
"Ignore sweet words that make you glow. / Pride, my friend, is rather unwise."
Message: Be careful of flattery (too much praise), because false praise is often used to take something from you. Pride makes us foolish.
Rama to the Rescue (Amar Chitra Katha)
Type: Comic-strip story (told through dialogue in speech bubbles)
What happens:
Message: Presence of mind (thinking quickly and calmly) can get us out of danger. The unit also teaches home safety and when to ask for help (Dial 100 in an emergency).

- ✓Flattery and pride make us foolish, so ignore sweet words that make you glow (The Raven and the Fox)
- ✓Presence of mind and cleverness can solve a dangerous problem (Rama to the Rescue)
- ✓Language: homophones, contractions, present progressive tense and adverbs of manner
- ✓Poetry skills: rhyming couplets, alliteration and opposites
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Before reading A Bottle of Dew, ask students about a time they worked hard and how it felt, then link it to Rama Natha's six years of effort
- →Hold a before/after chart of Rama Natha on the board (wasting money → tending a plantation)
- →Use stick puppets of the Raven and the Fox to act out the poem, one stanza per group
- →Read the poem aloud and have students clap on the rhyming words (limb/him, joke/croak)
- →Play a homophone game: show a card like 'sea' and students race to write a sentence using its pair 'see'
- →Act out the Rama to the Rescue plan, calling 'Rama' softly, loudly and very loudly, to teach adverbs
- →Discuss home safety and emergency numbers (100 for police) using the security-guard listening task
- →Give the tongue twister 'Bunty bhaiya bought a big bunch of bananas' and let students invent their own
