Unit 3: Fundamental Skills of Kho-Kho
Introduction

In this unit we will:
In Kho-Kho the chasing team sits in a line in the centre lane; one chaser runs, and passes the chase to a sitting teammate by giving a "kho".

💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Kho-Kho is an Indian chasing sport needing agility, speed, leg strength and teamwork.
- ✓Correct sitting stance and footwork (left leg for left, right leg for right) start every chase.
- ✓Kho is given by tapping the back and shouting 'kho', with at least one leg behind the cross lane.
- ✓Chasers use pole turns, pole dives, covering chase, fake kho and toe tapping; defenders use dodging and chains.
- ✓There are three types of kho — simple touch, early and late — and the 3-2-3 chain is a team defence formation.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Mark blocks on the ground so students practise the sitting stance in the right place.
- →Use long and short whistles consistently in Rise and Run so students learn the signals.
- →Demonstrate the pole turn and pole dive slowly, stressing which foot is planted.
- →Walk through the 3-2-3 chain without a chaser before adding one.
- →Run the Ace-of-the-fake game to make fake kho fun and quick.
- →Keep teams of nine for relays, matching real Kho-Kho team play.
- →Reinforce safety near the pole to avoid head or leg collisions.
📋 Assessment Questions
- Can the student take the correct sitting stance and rise with correct footwork?
- Can they give a legal kho (tap + call, one leg behind the cross lane)?
- Can they name and describe the three types of kho?
- Can they perform a pole turn and explain the pole dive footwork?
- Can they explain chain and 3-2-3 chain defence?
