Chapter 12: Beyond Earth
Introduction
Yangdol and her twin brother Dorjay, eleven years old, live in Nubra, Ladakh. With almost no cloud, air pollution or light pollution, their night sky blazes with thousands of stars. Their elders tell stories of how certain stars helped caravans passing through Nubra find their way in ancient days. The twins wonder how far and how big the stars are, and they love finding patterns among them.
Activity 12.1 – Let us draw: join stars in a picture of the night sky with imaginary lines, name your pattern after an animal or object, and make up a story. Everyone's patterns and stories come out different!
Key Concepts
12.1 Stars and Constellations
Earlier, star groups forming patterns were called constellations. Today, a constellation means a defined region of the sky that often contains such a pattern. The IAU divided the whole sky into 88 constellations.
12.2 Night Sky Watching
Excessive artificial light at night is light pollution. Along with smoke and dust, it hides stars in big cities.
12.3 Our Solar System
The Sun
The movement of an object around the Sun is called revolution.
Planets
A planet is a large, nearly spherical object that revolves around the Sun.
Natural Satellites
Objects that move around planets are satellites; moons are natural satellites.
Asteroids and Comets
The Sun, eight planets, their moons, and smaller objects like asteroids and comets together form the Solar System. Other objects shine by reflecting sunlight.
12.4 The Milky Way Galaxy
12.5 The Universe

💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Stars shine by their own light; constellations are sky regions with star patterns (88 defined by the IAU) that helped people navigate.
- ✓The Pole Star appears nearly fixed in the North and can be found using the Big Dipper; Sirius, near Orion, is the brightest star in the night sky.
- ✓The Sun is our nearest star; with eight planets, their moons, asteroids and comets it forms the Solar System.
- ✓Planets in order: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune — inner rocky planets and outer giant gas-and-ice planets.
- ✓The Moon is Earth's natural satellite; India's Chandrayaan-3 landed near its south pole; our Solar System belongs to the Milky Way Galaxy.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Begin with Activity 12.1: give printed star fields and let students invent and share their own constellation stories.
- →Use a dark classroom and a torch with a pierced cardboard (star projector) to show Orion and the Big Dipper patterns.
- →Demonstrate the 'five times the pointer stars' method to find the Pole Star on a chart before a real sky-watching evening.
- →Install Stellarium on the computer lab machines and let students find tonight's planets and constellations.
- →Build a scale-distance model of the solar system on the playground using toilet-paper sheets to show how far apart planets are.
- →Show ISRO images and videos of Chandrayaan-3 and discuss why 23 August is National Space Day.
- →Organise a supervised night-sky-watching session with parents, following the chapter's safety guidance.
📋 Assessment Questions
- Can the student explain how to locate the Pole Star using the Big Dipper and Sirius using Orion?
- Can the student list the eight planets in order and classify them as inner or outer?
- Can the student explain why we cannot see stars during the day and why Venus is not a star?
- Can the student distinguish between a star, planet, satellite, asteroid and comet?
- Can the student explain what light pollution is and suggest one personal action to reduce it?
