Chapter 3: Mindful Eating: A Path to a Healthy Body
Introduction
The chapter opens with a wise saying:
कोऽरुक्? कोऽरुक्? कोऽरुक्? हितभुक् मितभुक् ऋतुभुक्
Who is healthy? One who eats food that is wholesome, in moderate quantities, and appropriate for the season, time and place.
Medu and Mishti read the school's 'thought of the day', *annena jātāni jivanti* (अन्नेन जातानि जीवन्ति), which means "food gives life to living beings." The chapter explores what we eat, what food contains, how to test it, and how to eat wisely.
Key Concepts
3.1 What Do We Eat?
- Punjab: maize, wheat, chickpea → makki di roti, sarson da saag, chhole bhature; lassi, chhach
- Karnataka: rice, ragi, urad, coconut → idli, dosa, sambhar, ragi mudde, rasam; buttermilk, coffee
- Manipur: rice, bamboo, soya bean → eromba, utti, singju, kangsoi; black tea
3.2 Components of Food
At the 'Traditional Food Festival' (theme: Eat Healthy, Live Healthy), nutrition expert Dr Poshita says: "Health is the Ultimate Wealth."
Two case studies:
Vitamins and minerals chart (Fig. 3.5):
Nutrients are food components that provide energy, support growth, repair and protect the body. The major nutrients are carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals.
3.3 Testing Food Components
3.4 Balanced Diet
A balanced diet has all the essential nutrients, roughage and water in the right amounts.
3.5 Millets: Nutrition-rich Cereals
Jowar, bajra, ragi and sanwa are native Indian crops. They grow in varied climates and are rich in vitamins, iron, calcium and fibre, which is why they are called nutri-cereals.
3.6 Food Miles: From Farm to Plate
The story of a chapati: farmer grows wheat → threshing and winnowing → storage → grinding and packing → transport to shop → plate.
Food miles is the total distance food travels from producer to consumer.
Reducing food miles cuts cost and pollution, supports local farmers and keeps food fresh. Take only as much as you can eat, and don't waste food.

💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓The major nutrients are carbohydrates and fats (energy-giving), proteins (body-building), and vitamins and minerals (protective); roughage and water are also essential.
- ✓Deficiency diseases link to specific nutrients: Vitamin A–night blindness, B1–beriberi, C–scurvy, D–rickets, iodine–goitre, iron–anaemia.
- ✓Simple tests: iodine turns starch blue-black; fat leaves a translucent oily patch on paper; copper sulfate plus caustic soda turns protein violet.
- ✓A balanced diet has all nutrients, roughage and water in the right amounts; junk food is high in sugar and fat but low in other nutrients.
- ✓Millets are nutri-cereals; eating local reduces food miles, and we must never waste food.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Start with Activity 3.1: each student lists their week's food; then build a class chart grouping foods by nutrient.
- →Conduct the starch and fat tests with real potato, bread, coconut, peanuts and butter; let students first write predictions in Table 3.3.
- →Demonstrate the protein test yourself, as the book instructs, and explicitly teach the safety precautions for copper sulfate and caustic soda.
- →Bring real packets of chips and roasted chana and have students compare the nutrition labels (Activity 3.9) and decide which is junk food.
- →Tell the James Lind scurvy story as a detective case to connect it with the scientific method from Chapter 1.
- →Ask students to interview grandparents about chulha and sil-batta cooking (Activity 3.3) and share the findings.
- →Hold a mini millet tasting (ragi laddoo, bajra roti) and trace the chapati's journey from farm to plate on a timeline.
- →Assign a project: design a low-cost balanced diet chart for a 12-year-old using locally available foods.
📋 Assessment Questions
- Can the student classify foods as energy-giving, body-building or protective, with examples?
- Given symptoms (bleeding gums, bent bones, neck swelling), can the student name the disease and the missing nutrient?
- Can the student describe the procedure and positive result for the starch, fat and protein tests?
- Can the student explain why roasted chana is healthier than potato wafers using nutrition data?
- Can the student define food miles and suggest two ways to reduce them?
