Chapter 9: Performance (Music)
Introduction
A successful performance takes many steps, and there is much more to it than singing and playing. Even if you are not on stage, you can contribute a lot. The chapter has three parts: Plan, Prepare and Perform!
Part A: Plan
The planning phase is the most important one in putting a performance together.
Activity 9.1 Visualise a performance
Think about:
Activity 9.2 Create a song list
With your teacher, make a list of songs for the performance. Everyone can suggest songs they know and like, from this book or elsewhere. An invocation or welcome song is suggested:
Anand mangala mangalam, Atha swagatham, shubha swagatham…
Nitya nirantharatha, navatha, maanavatha, samatha, mamatha…
Did you know? The 1982 Asian Games, an international sporting event, was held in New Delhi. Swagatham shubha swagatham, composed by the renowned sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar, was sung at its inauguration ceremony.
Activity 9.3 Including folk music
Look for a folk song from a tradition other than your own. The example is an Odia folk song of the tribals of Koraput, Odisha, sung widely during Chaita Paraba. It is about coming together and celebrating the festival with love and enthusiasm:
Ee la ya lori la la la lori… Lori danguda lori bulai de…
Barane barane sita kaniya… Lakhmi kaniya bibha hai bu…
Part B: Prepare
Activity 9.4 Rehearsal and feedback
Part C: Perform
Activity 9.5 Production, promotion and support

Activity 9.6 Final performance

Afterwards, get constructive feedback from the audience and discuss it with your team. Congratulations, you are now a young performer!

💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Understands that a performance has three stages: Plan, Prepare and Perform, and that planning is the most important
- ✓Helps choose a repertoire, including an invocation song and a folk song from another tradition
- ✓Rehearses with purpose: uses feedback, a practice plan, dynamics, and lead or supporting roles
- ✓Organises production and promotion: stage, lights and sound, props, an anchor, posters and social media
- ✓Presents a final performance with a welcome and a thank-you, and reflects on audience feedback
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Give each group the Activity 9.1 questions as a planning sheet with deadlines
- →Build the song list democratically; include the 'Swagatham' invocation and a folk song from another state
- →Tell the story of Pandit Ravi Shankar's song at the 1982 Asian Games to show music's role in big events
- →Assign clear roles (singers, instrumentalists, anchor, stage and lights, poster team) so everyone contributes
- →Hold two rehearsals with peer feedback, and have each student write a practice plan in their journal
- →Link with Visual Arts for posters and with Theatre for stage design
- →Record the final show and hold a debrief using audience feedback
