Unit 5: Bravehearts — A Homage to Our Brave Soldiers, My Dear Soldiers, Rani Abbakka
Unit Overview
Unit 5 – Bravehearts honours the courage and sacrifice of India's defenders. It has three pieces:
Together they show bravery on the battlefield, the everyday dedication of soldiers, and the courage of a woman ruler who refused to bow to a foreign power.
A Homage to Our Brave Soldiers
Type: Two informal letters (prose)
Letter I – Soumya to Ananda (Jayanagar, Bengaluru, 14 April 20XX)
Soumya writes about her school trip to the National War Memorial near India Gate, New Delhi.
"I was also overwhelmed by the interminable flame as a metaphor for eternal stories of courage and valour."
The four concentric circles (Chakras):
Soumya will present the story of Major Padmapani Acharya (2 Rajputana Rifles), awarded the Maha Vir Chakra posthumously for Kargil, 1999. Before battle, he wrote to his father quoting the Bhagavad Gita (2.37): if you fight, you will either win heaven or win the kingdom on earth, so arise and be determined to fight.
Letter II – Ananda to Soumya (Chandigarh, 24 April 20XX)
Message: Our freedom and peace come at a great cost. Honouring soldiers is every citizen's duty.
My Dear Soldiers

👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Show a photograph or virtual tour of the National War Memorial and have students label the four chakras on a concentric-circle diagram
- →Read Albert Ekka's citation aloud, then ask students to list every action that shows 'disregard to his personal safety'
- →Hold a paired recitation of 'My Dear Soldiers' using the book's pause marks (/) and volume changes for pride and tenderness
- →Act out the Rani Abbakka comic as a short skit (Abbakka, Veera Narsimha, envoy, Ribero, Governor of Goa) to practise dialogue
- →Turn the comic's speech bubbles into indirect speech on the board to teach tense, pronoun and time-word changes
- →Build a class 'Bravehearts Wall' collage with each group researching one brave woman (e.g. Rani Chennamma, Rani Gaidinliu)
- →Invite a local ex-serviceman or NCC officer to talk about the Armed Forces' peacetime work before the letter-writing task
