Chapter 1: Large Numbers Around Us
Introduction
The chapter opens in Chintamani, a town in Karnataka. The farmer Eshwarappa overhears Ramanna say that India once had about a lakh varieties of rice. His children Roxie and Estu wonder: if we tasted one new variety every day, could we taste all of them in a 100-year life? (No! 100 years is only about 36,500 days.) This question leads us to explore how big a lakh, a crore and even bigger numbers really are.
Key Ideas
1.1 How big is one lakh?
Reading and writing numbers (Indian system)
1.2 Land of Tens — calculators with special buttons
1.3 Of Crores and Crores!
1 crore = 100 lakh = 1,00,00,000 (1 followed by 7 zeros).
1 arab = 100 crore = 1,00,00,00,000 = 1 billion (9 zeros).
1.4 Exact and Approximate Values
1.5 Patterns in Products

Maths in Daily Life
Large numbers appear in census data, government budgets, distances in space and prices of houses. Estimation helps us check bills, plan events and spot mistakes quickly.
💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Read and write large numbers using lakh, crore and arab (Indian) and million and billion (American) systems.
- ✓Place commas correctly: 3-2-2-2 pattern (Indian) and 3-3-3 pattern (American).
- ✓Understand how big a lakh or crore is by comparing with familiar quantities.
- ✓Round numbers to the nearest thousand, lakh or crore and use estimation to check calculations.
- ✓Use factorising and regrouping (×5 = ÷2 then ×10, ×25 = ÷4 then ×100) and predict the number of digits in a product.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Start with Estu's question: ask students to calculate how many days are in a 100-year life and compare with one lakh.
- →Play the 'Land of Tens' calculator game on the board — students call out how many presses of +10, +100 or +1000 make a number.
- →Make a class chart showing lakh, crore, arab alongside million and billion so students see 10 lakh = 1 million.
- →Use real newspaper headlines with large numbers and ask students to rewrite them in both systems.
- →Have groups round the same number to five 'nearest neighbours' and compare answers.
- →Give quick mental-maths rounds on multiplying by 5, 25 and 125 using the halving/quartering trick.
- →Encourage 'Did you ever wonder?' questions (e.g. can you count a million coins in a day?) and solve them with reasonable assumptions.
📋 Assessment Questions
- Can the student write 70,53,138 in words and convert 'one crore one lakh one thousand ten' to 1,01,01,010?
- Can the student convert a number from the Indian system to the American system and back?
- Can the student give the five nearest neighbours of a large number correctly?
- Can the student explain why a 2-digit × 2-digit product has 3 or 4 digits?
- Can the student use estimation to decide whether an exact answer is reasonable?
