Chapter 3: A Peek Beyond the Point
Introduction
Sonu's mother could not fix a toy because the screw was not the right size. The second screw looked the same but was slightly longer. How small can such a difference be, and how do we measure it? When exact measures are needed, we split a unit into smaller units. This chapter extends the Indian place value system beyond the ones place — to tenths, hundredths and thousandths — and introduces decimal notation.
Key Ideas
3.1 The Need for Smaller Units
3.2 A Tenth Part
10 one-tenths make 1 unit.
3.3 A Hundredth Part
10 hundredths make 1 tenth; 100 hundredths make 1 unit.
3.4 Decimal Place Value
3.5 Units of Measurement
3.6 Locating and Comparing Decimals
3.7 Addition and Subtraction of Decimals
3.8 More on the Decimal System

Maths in Daily Life
Prices (₹45.50), body temperature (98.6°F), fuel and milk in litres, athletes' timings, and medicine doses all use decimals — and small decimal errors can have big consequences.
💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Understand tenths, hundredths and thousandths as smaller units that extend the Indian place value system.
- ✓Read and write numbers using the decimal point, and convert between fractions and decimals.
- ✓Convert units of length, weight and money using decimals (mm–cm–m, g–kg, paise–rupees).
- ✓Locate decimals on a number line, compare them place by place and find the closest decimal.
- ✓Add and subtract decimals by lining up place values, and estimate the range of the answer.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Start with two nearly identical screws or pencils and ask students to measure them precisely with a ruler.
- →Use a paper strip folded and marked into tenths and hundredths to show 10 hundredths = 1 tenth.
- →Build a large place value chart that extends to tenths, hundredths and thousandths on the wall.
- →Play a 'Zero dilemma' game: students decide which of 4.5, 4.05, 4.50, 4.050 are equal.
- →Use real shop bills and old coins to practise rupee–paise conversion.
- →Discuss the decimal disasters (Amsterdam, Air Canada, medicine doses) to show why the decimal point matters.
- →Let students measure classmates' arm lengths in cm and add them using decimals.
📋 Assessment Questions
- Can the student write 2 ones, 3 tenths and 5 hundredths as 2.35 and read it correctly?
- Can the student convert 254 g to kg and 75 paise to rupees?
- Can the student arrange 11.01, 1.011, 1.101, 11.10, 1.01 in descending order?
- Can the student add 75.345 + 86.691 with correct regrouping?
- Can the student explain why 4.5 hours after noon is 4:30 p.m.?
